Is the Max level cap of 30 locked on a first playthrough like ME1 or not? Can the max be reached on a first playthrough?

Lvl30 is max, always. All levels take 1000 exp and with an imported char best you can start at is lvl5.

On your FIRST playthrough, the max you could get is maybe 20000-22000 experience.

On your FIRST playthrough with all the DLC you'd be able to get about 4000 more.

Once you get the 25% exp achievement then you can definitely reach lvl30 in a single playthrough, i think with or without DLC. Before that though i don't think its possible. You might just about do it with an imported lvl60 char to start at lvl5 if you've got all the DLC but otherwise no.

I was able to reach level 30 on my first play through with an imported 60 and only the Cerberus Network DLC (including the Firewalker pack.) So it is possible, if you do every side quest available. I think I hit 30 on Legion's loyalty mission, right before hitting the Omega-4 relay. So, it is possible, though you have to literally do everything.

Sudsy, I'd be very interested to know how you hit level 60 in a single ME1 play through. Putting aside the fact that level 50 is the cap until you have beaten the game at least once, and the cap is hard coded to the save (I'm guessing someone else had beaten the game on the system you used to subsequently beat the game), even doing every single side quest and killing every enemy on foot, AND with all achievements unlocked, the best I have ever done was still 50K experience points shy of level 58, let alone level 60 in a single play through. That includes finding every single mineral deposit, every UNC quest, and unlocking every locked container. Did you follow a specific guide to min-max exp gain?

EDIT: I should point out, however, that I was NOT able to buy all of the upgrades available in the game the first time through ME2. There simply weren't enough credits available, even with the "Rich" import bonus.

I don't think its possible to buy *everything*. But if you ignore pretty much everything but actual upgrades, so no armour pieces or junk for your cabin, no Hack or Bypass Modules (because you don't really need them anyway) I think you'd be able to buy everything in a single playthrough. I've been modding my starting cash to 350,000 (Rich lvl6 char with long service medal) and i normally finish with loads of spare cash if i ignore those things. You might miss 1 or 2 things without all the DLC but with the DLC you should get plenty.

Sounds like its not possible without any DLC if thats the case. Without Zaeed or Firewalker you'd of ended with just below 24000 so not enough for lvl30.

I should specify that, with the Rich import bonus, I missed out on two upgrades (Shotgun and something else). So, if I had skipped all the extra armor and cabin upgrades, I believe I would have had enough. With the rich import bonus and the ME2 bonus for beating the game I'm almost sure you can get enough money for everything, even without the DLC.

As far as the level goes, I think you're right, and there is most definitely not enough to hit 30 if you're starting from scratch.

I've hit level 27 in one playthrough without any bonuses and only Cerberus Network DLC. I also didn't complete all assignments, most but not all.
