If steam ever shut down its servers, what would happen to the games we bought online? Would they disappear forever, and the only copy left would be on your computer? Would the games even be able to connect to the internet, since they all REQUIRE steam to run?

if BioWare forces us to use Steam like F:NV I'm going to be really upset. =/

That's a good question... maybe they'll release a patch to for make the games no-steam. But it's pretty possible that the games that aren't installed will be gone forever

hopefully, we'd be able to get CD's retroactively, or something of that nature. at least with bioware games, we can register CD keys (I have some indy games on steam that I have no idea how I would get back if it were to stop working :/)

actually, hopefully steam doesn't decide to shut down their servers any time soon and if they do, we'd get a nice advance warning and contingency ideas of how to keep playing the games we bought.

I suspect there is some dbag legal crap in the 500 paragraphs of your user agreement that says "if we shut down our servers, you are screwed. nogames4u" or something.

Yeah probably..
I bet many companies use this method to cover themselves.. They know we're not gonna read 500 paragraphs to play our copies and that's just disgusting..

so I just skimmed through the agreement and this is what I found

"In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase."

there's also a mention of possibility of monetary refund in a different paragraph.

the biggest issue is they say may, rather then will :/

Interesting. The worst part about user agreements is that you need a masters in law to UNDERSTAND most of it. Without one, you may not know what exactly a word is referring to, and if it is a legal loophole.
