Yep...right. *looks at the calender* hmm it's not even the first of April, I'm baffled.

Yes sports fans, according to The Bottom Line, ME2 is the BEST RPG of the past decade, beating out games like KotOR, Oblivion, and Fallout 3. Don't get me wrong, I love ME2, but best RPG of the decade? You're joking, right?

EDIT: fixed title spelling

Er, no. It's barely an RPG anymore to begin with, KoToR, DAO, FO3, FNV are all superior RPGs.

Heck, if you include 2000, you've got Baldur's Gate II!!

You know, all the other "AWESOME" RPGs you mentioned still made the list. Maybe ME2 won because the author liked it the most?

Or maybe a genre shouldn't be defined by mechanics alone.

I agree. ME2 is still an rpg in my book, and I like that Bioware isn't letting the genre's past prevent them from taking strides forward.

Some of you, try to understand difference between RPG and traditional RPG. RPG is alot wider consept than just traditional RPG style.

When consider all RPG's in the genre, I'm not sure what's best so far. I don't think Mass Effect 2 is best, because it's also more hybrid than RPG. Best action RPG, then maybe. How ever, anyone can have they own opinion what's best, even the orginal article writer.

A lot of the critieria you would use to define video game genres would fall under 'mechanics', but that's getting into semantics. Don't get me wrong, ME2 is a good game and deserves to be in the top 10. It's not just because it lacks a lot of the standard RPG 'mechanics' why I don't think it's the best. It's the weakness in the main plot and the problems with internal consistency which I think rule it out as the best. The fact they also missed Deus Ex leads me to question this list. Again this is all IMHO, if you guys truely think this is the pinnacle of RPG, fair enough.

Who cares what that one site says?

This topic is just an excuse to start the "ME2 isn't an RPG why do people like it WAAAHHHH" crap again.

Pretty much this.

A platformer is a game based around jumping over stuff.

A shooter is a game based around shooting stuff.

A RPG is a game based around... errr....

The definition of RPG is so subjective it can mean nearly anything. Heck you could argue Super Mario is a RPG if you roleplay Mario as a drug addict who just can't stop eating mushrooms and mass murders goombas in his spare time.

Ignoring the "it doesn't have inventory so its not an RPG" crowd, for me, its certainly better than Fallout 3 or Oblivion. Those games were good but shallow.

Morrowind is close to being the top for me, because it was the biggest, coolest, most stylish RPG sandbox I ever got to play in. And the story and setting was cool. And with some mods, the balance and graphic were sweet.

KotoR wowed me. However, it had little replay value for me. I played it 3 times and never really went back.

ME is tricky for me. The story of the first really gripped me but the tedious side missions and off-kilter combat mechanics dragged it down. ME2 gameplay was really fun and the characters were amazing but a little of the shine was off the story - middle chapter syndrome.

DA and FNV are on my list but not near the top. Heck, I like Witcher better than FNV.

So for me, its a toss up between Morrowind and ME. I would say Morrowind wins but only because of modding.

Oblivion sucked krogan balls. Fallout 3 was good but nowhere close to the best of the past decade.

Personally, KotOR is my pick but it doesn't really matter what I think 'cuz whatever is on that website is set in stone for everybody.

ME2 is greater than any other RPG in the last ten years because it changed RPGs. Dull combat? Gone. Boring looting? Gone. Complex inventory? Gone.

What's left? Pure role playing. You interact with character, make choices with them, roll through fun action sequences, customize your characters, and unfold a story. You can't beat ME2 as an RPG. It moves outside of the genre... It's a hybrid of a game and a movie.

Get used to it. All successful RPGs are going to look like ME2 from here out. There will be a couple throwbacks and they'll break even, but even then they'll bomb. Games taking a nod from ME2 will draw fans from RPGs, shooters, action games, curious girlfriends.... all sorts of crowds. That's more money and that's why corporations are founded. Nostalgia RPGs will draw from one, small crowd: aging RPG fanatics. Not much money = out of business. Darwin, baby!

hmmm, I found Mass Effect as more of a shooter than an RPG. Especially Mass Effect 2. Somehow, building your character right didn't seem as crucial as you can always compensate via the shooter aspects of it. It was still enjoyable though.

I liked ME1 and DAO for what they were. I didnt find ME2 to be much of a rpg at all.

I cant tell if you are being sarcastic though. :?

So in your eyes, what makes something an RPG is 3-4 dialogue options, limited choices and character interactions, a skeletal husk of a main story and a midget of a skill-tree.

..Right, well, I always did say that when Black Isle went belly-up the Golden Age of RPGs had ended.

As for this list of best RPGs? If we're talking in the past ten years, wouldn't that stand to name Baldur's Gate II and its expansion, Throne of Bhaal for that title? Y'know, an ACTUAL RPG, with a much longer, more in-depth story, better characters, more quests that have merit and decisions?

By the same token, what make a game an RPG to you is slow, clunky combat, looting 6 copper, and arcane inventory.
