Anyone who believes that list is accurate is an idiot. ME2 is far from the best RPG in the last decade. Hell ME2 ain't even the best RPG in the Mass Effect universe as that spot belongs to Mass Effect 1 still due to ME2 being such a sub-par game in many regards. Though what the best RPG of the last decade is I could not tell ya but I know fro certain it ain't ME2 and any sane person will agree on that.

So in your eyes, what makes something an RPG is 3-4 dialogue options, limited choices and character interactions, a skeletal husk of a main story and a midget of a skill-tree.

..Right, well, I always did say that when Black Isle went belly-up the Golden Age of RPGs had ended.

By the same token, what make a game an RPG to you is slow, clunky combat, looting 6 copper, and arcane inventory.

Id rather a game with a good story and plot then one that focuses on shooting gameplay. ME2's plot was terrible, and sorry that you find inventories too compex.

Baldur's Gate 2's combat wasn't all that slow, nor was there any slow fund-gathering, either. I guess it's easy for someone like you to make assumptions about a game you've never played before, though.

And no, what makes an RPG good for me is in-depth choice, actual interesting characters and actual, viable dialog options. Sorry, but I'll take this kind of dialog option when a guard is stopping me from walking up a random, unimportant staircase..

Guard
: Halt! Where do you think you're going?
Protagonist
: Upstairs. Where do YOU think you're going?

..over 'I should go' any day of the week.

Totally serious.  Also, ME2 was pure RPG and it kicked ass.  :wizard::wizard::wizard:

More like half-shooter, half-RPG, but it was still goddamn orgasmic.

TWO GENRES IN ONE!  YEAH BABY YEAH!

I disagree!   Adding 3D to RPGs didn't make them less "RPG."  It simply added another dimension to fun to the game.  In the same way, adding shootin' and shooter style game play didn't make ME2 less of an RPG either.  It, in fact, made it a more accessable game to play roles in.  ME2 simply gained more ways to entertain me.  Which it did.

Though I do like your capslocks.  Large, bold, firm. :wub::wub:

Yup, and that's what makes these debates pointless. We simply refuse to agree on the definition of the term. I just wish they would let it go.

I don't think of Star Wars as really science fiction, but fantasy or maybe space opera (fantasy in space) but I don't go haywire when someone insists on calling it science fiction.

To me the dialogue choices and branch story make an RPG, not inventory. I'm fine with people who want to define it differently, I just wish they wouldn't start yammering every time someone likes ME2 as an RPG.

So Bioware were lying when they outright stated it was a Shooter-RPG hybrid?

The inventory in Mass Effect wasn't complex.

It was a piece of ****. Impossible to organize, and since you were unable to omni-gel more than one thing at a time you could spend forever breaking stuff down to loot generic reskinned weapon that handled the same as every other weapon.

lol yup, especially when edi told me to go out on my next mission with my entire team, when I had no other missions left, leaving the crew to be conveniently attacked by the collectors. Or how I was killed in the first 5 minutes of the game, and revived 2 years later :D

What a great story.

I was actually referring to the DAO inventory. I had no problem with that, but I'll agree that ME1's inventory was pretty damn bad.

It had some great short stories, however the main plot was pitiful. The lack of inventory or anything else RPG-like is mostly irrelevent.

I heard people talk about that game, so I bought it and played it.  It was fun, but ugly.  Good story, too, but I had to spend a ton of time fidgeting with finding the best weapons and equipment for my mans.  Since some fights were almost impossible without a well thought out party.  For me, spending an hour calculating things sounds like work.  Boring!

Then you shoudl like ME2.  It's exactly what you described.  It is, in fact, the best RPG in the last ten years.

The difference is that in Mass Effect 2, you still leveled your weapons and armor throughout the game.
So the weapons provided a variety of gameplay mechanics while still improving over the course of the story.

And I can compare it to Blade Runner and Empire Strikes Back, which at least it resembles more that Twilight. But what would that prove?

Morrowind was way better than oblivion. And fallout three was like a very toned down version of either of those games. Also no final fatasy tactics advanced, or The world ends with you.

It's better by a little bit.  ME1's inventory sucked balls, but Bioware WAY overcompensated with ME2.  I like that there are fewer guns and that I don't have to dick around buying/selling/omni-gelling, but just two (default) to choose from is far too limiting.

I think we should get around five models for each type, with each one handling differently and not a single one obviously superior/inferior to all the others.  For example, one would have a high rate of fire and large clip size, but low damage per shot and so-so accuracy, while another is like the fist of God, but with horrible aim and a puny clip.  A third would be highly accurate with so-so damage and clip size, a fourth would have some sort of nifty gimmick attached that makes it fun to use, and a fifth would be some fancy, class-exclusive thing that you earn as a reward for beating the game or something.  That'd be plenty for me, and quite balanced, I should say.

The main plot was very well constructed. It was a parallel to the first game but from the point of view of a different faction. While in ME1, you were part of the paragon faction, in ME2, you were part of the renegade faction. At the end of each, you faced similar choices, to advance your faction or set it back. It sets up ME3 perfectly, where you will be between both factions, with neutral parties like Liara, where you will eventually have to side with one or the other (or neither?).

And the story advanced fine along the parallel structure. If you made a list of events from the start of ME1 to the end of ME2, you would see a very consistant development in the story. And you got to expand your setting, see new races, face new challenges. Except instead of mindless meaningless pointless side missions, the side missions were peripherally linked to the conclusion as you delved into the deep side stories of your teammates.

Its a very well constructed plot and story. I won't say all the writing was perfect, I wish a few things had been written or paced differently, but the mindless bashing is just silly.

I agree with that, ME1's inventory was terrible. A big thing with the guns in ME2 was that there were so few, and they released more as dlc. They should have been in the game to begin with.
