Get used to it. All successful RPGs are going to look like ME2 from here out. There will be a couple throwbacks and they'll break even, but even then they'll bomb. Games taking a nod from ME2 will draw fans from RPGs, shooters, action games, curious girlfriends.... all sorts of crowds. That's more money and that's why corporations are founded. Nostalgia RPGs will draw from one, small crowd: aging RPG fanatics. Not much money = out of business. Darwin, baby!

Uh Deus Ex anyone? didnt that come out in 2000? Because as much as I love and worship the Mass Effect series, I gotta say the original Deus Ex still takes that award at least for me

Ding ding ding!  Great point, sir!  For me, I'd go with ME2 because of the tighter story.  Deus Ex could get muddled here and there and while I had a fantastic time playing it (again and again and again) I never felt much connection to the NPCs.  With ME2, I like the faster, tighter story.  I guess I just like the characters I met in ME2 more than the DE crew.  Plus, and this is a personal pecadillo, "dark world" stories don't get my nipples hard at all.  I like that ME2's world is more shades of grey.  ME2 still wins it by me though.

For that matter... ad hominen is less frequent here I think then the old standby of "I can't believe ME2 is an RPG... therefor it must not be." Thinking errors abound.

Others have been doing the same thing, claiming that ME2 is the best and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong... Although I wouldnt start calling people idiots for liking the game. I liked it too, I just dont think its the best rpg of the decade. Maybe of scifi but not of all rpgs in total.

Honestly the list surprises me too...  I wouldn't have put it first either... but it was REALLY good, and certainly deserving a mention on a list like that. One of the reasons I don't think you can rate games on a list like that is that personal tastes just run too far afield. I have a friend that swears up and down that Final Fantasy 9 was like, the best RPG EVAR... and he totally hates everything Bethesda ever did. Shrug, different strokes.

Alas, the tooth fairy is more likely to ask my hand in marriage than for people on the internet to act with maturity.  To be honest I haven't played enough RPGs to really say which is the "best," but of the ones I've played, ME2 is my favorite.  However, that's totally my personal taste talking, since I can't stand most "classical" RPGs.  Way too piddly; much easier to just shoot things.

I guess that's one of the things I like the most about Mass Effect (both games) in general: it's got the depth and customization of an RPG, but with shooting.

Oh yeah, and possibly the best cast of characters ever (in my subjective opinion).

How about this monkey wrench for that argument: You both bought the game. Spent real money and played it. Whether or not you enjoyed it, someone made money off you. The question is, will you continue to spend your money on the next in the series and support Bioware or will you go else where for your enjoyment?

Yes, I liked it. If you didn't, sorry that it's not your cup of tea. If you think it was the greatest RPG ever to grace mankind, ok... I don't, but I really enjoy playing it.

See.... that's really interesting. Lots of people rave about Oblivion, but it seems that just as many loathe it with a passion. It really is completely up to personal taste... maybe more so than any other genre.

There is one thing that truly renders this list, and the entire argument you are all having, null and void.

#3. Diablo 2 (2000)

Not an RPG by even the longest stretch of the imagination. If you want to include D2 in the list, then you open it up to other games, such as Overlord 1 & 2, both of which far outshine half of the other games in there.

Just to show that the author of the list doesnt know what the hell they are talking about, Dues Ex is in their list for top 10 shooters, rather than RPG's. Dues Ex was like ME, RPG with shooter mechanics, not a shooter with RPG elements.

My only problem with that list is that it's dominated by Bioware games.I just don't consider them to be a developer which excel at anything,but luckily for them they have enough manpower to create solid packages.Everyone else is flawed in numerous ways,like Obsidian who have the best writers and rpg ideas mixed with atrocious coders/3d engineers,game designers,artists,etc.Bethesda with great free roaming gameplay mixed with atrocious writers and animators and they can't come up with a solid leveling system to save their lives.Square-Enix who have the most money and best artists,but are failing all over the place in term of fundamental game design 101 (FF XIV is one of the worst game of the last decade imo...).I think CD Projekt is more talented than Bioware,but it remains to be seen if they can expand when they have the disadvantage of coming from a country with a low background in creating videogames (Poland).

Personally, I prefer the free-play sandbox type games.

Don't get me wrong, I love ME 1&2, but I think games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 just have something special about them. They actually make you feel part of a living world.

I'll never forget the feeling I experienced in Oblivion when I escaped from the imperial city prison for the first time and watch the sunset over the mountains and realising the true scope of the game world, or that feeling you get from wandering alone through the capital wasteland in Fallout 3 spotting enemies way off in the distance and planning fun strategies to kill them.

What are you talking about. Fallout 3 had a fantastic levelling system - vastly improved over Oblivion.
