Don't act like you wouldn't cream your pants if Mass Effect 3 was a kung fu spaghetti western on mars with laser pistols and robots.

Edit:

The Exogenesis Symphony is pretty awesome and scifish too.

They should have had Vangelis from the beginning.  That would have been something.  As long as he keeps that sci-fi 80s synth feel (ME2 had it too! :P), I'm alright with this.  Too bad the buck is going to be passed on to consumers in the form of overpriced DLC.

Joking!

This is absolutely fantastic news. Clint Mansell is my favourite film composer behind Hans Zimmer and I can't wait to see what he does with ME3's score. Don't be afraid people, having Clint on board is the best news.

And hey, Uprising even has the oldschool scifi synth all through it!

Hgggnnn.

Cosmos theme was glorious.

Now I'm picturing the Codex narrated by Carl Sagan.

A saving grace for a soundtrack composer is: if they get one of the guys from Independence Day, Jurassic Park, or Halo videogame to compose the soundtrack. That would be awesome too.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

But on a serious note I'm very worried about this, Mass Effect 1's music was simply perfect it really captured the world of ME and was one of the best if not the best thing in the original. ME 2's music felt like a step down in comparison despite still being great & this is another reason that makes me think this isn't a good way to end the trilogy. We've already had Drew leave who nearly single-handedly created the story and world and this makes me worried.

Drew didn't "nearly single handly creat the story and world". Mac, as well as three other people were part of the process of writing the sotryline and the world. They did the same amount of writing and came were all part of the creative process. All of them came up with story for all three games before the first was even made. I am sick of people giving Drew all the credit for the story of Mass Effect or blaming only Mac for their dissatisfaction of Mass Effect 2.

I never said anything agianst Mac I think he's a great writer and I didn't say Drew created evrything on his own I said "Nearly single-handedly" and I apoligise for the exageration.:(

For people who aren't familiar with much of his work, here's a sample of some very different stuff, just for variety's sake:

From the Moon soundtrack

From The Fountain's soundtrack

From the Pi soundtrack

From Mansell's old band Pop Will Eat Itself

Dear People Who Love Mass Effect -
So...maybe it's time to actually say something?

Working on the Mass Effect series was epic. It was mind-bending, soul-coughing, astral-plane traveling delicious loveliness - all the way. The games themselves are works of art. I wouldn't change one note of it that myself, Sam, David, Richard or Jimmy wrote. As you may have noticed by now, I am not returning to score the final game. The reasons are much too complicated to explain here, but suffice to say that the people at BioWare and I are still friends and we all really still like each other a lot. More importantly, the score for ME3 will be great and even more important than that, the game will liikely be (being BioWare and all) super duper fantastic.
Clint Mansell is cool. Enjoy.
Oh and thanks to everyone for the kind words here and over the years. For those of you who didn't say nice things, that's cool too. I'm still searching for the perfect chord. If you guys see it laying around, let me know, ok?
See you in another game in another crazy universe!

-Jack

Jack-- your work on the first two games is utterly amazing. I wish you best of luck with all your endeavors, and success in the future. You made the games what they are -- fantastically epic, amazing, endearing, engaging space operas. Without the music, they would have been nothing, and I salute you for it.

Is there any way you could expound outside of these forums as to why you're not doing ME3? If it's contractual or private, I understand.

Once again, best of luck... and so many thanks, from all of BioWare's fans.

Normally I'd be all against film composers doing game work, as most dont 'get it', but Mansell is god-tier in composition, extremely flexible in style, and unlike Zimmer and co doesn't rely of big, loud, bombastic 'Hollywood' sounds to sell his scores.

Mansell is one of my favourite composers of all time. I'm absolutely positive ME3's OST will be brilliant.

Please tell me that he's actually simply joining Jack Wall and co. and not just doing it himself. To change the composer for the final third of the trilogy just seems silly to me. If this really is the case and Jack Wall is out, it's not exactly doing much to allay my fears that ME3 is going to be even more "Modern Hollywood" and even less "1980's-era=esque sci-fi" in style.

I think Jack Wall wanted to move on anyway.  Besides, Clint Mansell has a very impressive body of work - have you seen the Fountain?  There's also Pi, Black Swan, Moon, Requiem for a Dream, amongst others.  Don't get me wrong, I love Jack Wall, but I actually think this guy is leagues better...  I don't think they couldn't have found a better person for this, imo.

I should be asleep, but couldn't resist :P

I'm not saying I don't think he's good, what I'm saying is that I don't think he's good for Mass Effect 3. It also seems silly to me to change composter in the final third. It'd be like watching Return of the Jedi and not having John Williams or Return of the King without Howard Shore. I can appreciate Mansell's music, but I think this is a bad move. And, as I said, I think his style from what I've heard is too orchestral and not 1980's style synth enough. I personally think that if one had to get rid of Jack Wall and replace him then the likes of Daft Punk (Tron Legacy) or Christopher Franke (Babylon 5) would be far better suited. Still, I'd just rather have Jack Wall back. I love his stuff, and Mass Effect --to me-- won't be the same without it. Especially its iconic theme, both the original and the more militaristic and epic "Suicide Mission" variant.

edit: Wow, I just saw your response here, Jack (if you're still here reading). I hope whatever the circumstances are for you not returning for the final part aren't negative ones where you're concerned. I've loved your work in the games thus far, and I'm sad to see you go, because I can't imagine the final part being the same without you. If you left Mass Effect out of your own choice, know that I wish you well in the future, wherever it may take you, even if I'm disappointed in your decision. If not, then... well... I'm sorry, and still wish you well, and am disappointed in whoever decided not to keep you aboard. So either way, I sadly wish you farewell and good luck. It may please you to know that my iPod is filled with your music from Mass Effect and gets listened to almost every day whenever I travel in the car anywhere, so I'll still be listening.

Seriously, it's really cool to hear you giving Clint Mansell your "blessing" - I really think he'll add a lot to your work.  I hope the reasons you're not coming back aren't anything s****ty...

Suicide mission, Saren's theme, TIM's theme, New Worlds, Samara's theme, The Collectors' theme, End Run, etc., are some of my favourite pieces.

What makes people think because Mansell's work it primarily orchestral it won't translate in Mass Effect? Like any decent digital artist, traditional skills are absolutely fundamental. Do you think because Vangelis uses synths he has no classical background? Wrong. So wrong. If anything, Mansell's classical talent and experience will prove invaluable when composing this score, whether it be orchestral or electronic in nature.

Then I suggest you listen to more of his work.  He has very ranged experience - including "synthy" stuff (e.g. listen to his work for "Pi").  And he's clearly adept at seamlessly interweaving his own music to a pre-existing body of work (listen to his work for "Black Swan").  Actually, just listen to everything he's done and look at who he's worked with (e.g. Trent Reznor and Mogwai).  I'm really psyched about this - not only has he proved that he's adept at a range of different styles of music, and adding his own style to someone else's work, but he's also created some of the best scores out there (imho).  The Fountain is one of the most hauntingly beautiful contemporary scores I've heard.

Kinda ambiguous feeling about this I have...don't know what to think of it...I guess I just wait for some first samples...but I would rather prefer Daft Punk...however I am wondering if Wall and Hulick are still somewhat involved

Wall of Sound working on the majority of the soundtrack while Mansell is doing something like Death is the Road to Awe for the last part of the game...and I'm more than satisfied.
