Film soundtracks usually have about 40-50% hit rate with decent tracks.

Mass Effect had about an 80% hit rate with EXCELLENT tracks.

I am really hoping the standard doesn't drop. So far, no one has been able to console me with their Clint Mansell examples. None of it sounds like Mass Effect, not even remotely.

I suppose that's because none of the films he's scored are like Mass Effect.  I would humbly suggest focussing on the fact that that A) his scores don't all sound the same (he ranges from DnB to classical); B) that each one he's done is appropriate to the film they're for; C) he can respect and adapt his own work with someone elses; and D) some of his work is awe-inspiring.  You can believe me, Sally.

And that's kind of what concerns me. Why would BioWare pick somebody to score Mass Effect and fill Jack Wall's shoes who hadn't done anything like it before, as opposed to somebody who was experienced at scoring sci-fi in similar vein, like Christopher Franke for example?

The only explanation I can think of: BioWare is done giving exposition on the universe and making you feel and learn it; this time the focus will be on the emotional level, by letting everything diverge into unexpected and wildly different conclusions, ending the trilogy for good.

Anyone knows who scored the Mass Effect 3 reveal trailer? I got the impression from the IGN article that Mansell is already working on the score, maybe he did the trailer music?

If Clint really is doing the music... I... I will have to buy the soundtrack the moment it releases. I am obsessed with his amazing music! Obsessed!

I have enjoyed every single song from Mass Effect 2 soundtrack. With a lot of games under my belt I can say that none of them had as great a music as this one. Usually it was hit and miss. As long as new composer can keep that consistency and keep the Mass Effect feel I won't mind, however, it's risky bringing a new face to complete the trilogy. It may not seem like it, but music is still one of the best instruments (get it?) to emotionally engage a player.

Because it may not be the best idea to get someone who will just fall into his standard creative patterns and end up producing a generic Sci-Fi soundtrack that doesn't resonate. There's a certain risk here, but someone with less of a genre background may still get the mood right and find a more fresh approach to it rather than your typcial Sci-Fi movie tropes. Or it could completely backfire, of course.

Being that I'm a huge fan of all Aronofsky's movies, no matter how played the Requiem for a Dream theme is, I'm pretty excited about this. I liked a lot of Jack Wall's stuff too, but this could really be interesting.

Initially I was on the fence, but the more I think about it, the more pumped I am. I have no doubt he will honor some of ME's core themes but he will take those and bring them to a whole new level. He is one of the most talented composers on the planet and we are lucky he is going to be scoring our favorite game.

Clint Mansell is a versatile composer, i'm sure his soundtrack will be extraordinary.

Here are some more examples of his music:

Hmmm, a different composer will create a different atmosphere in the game, for sure... I hope this still "feels" like Mass Effect.

There was news flying around saying Jack Wall is done with the trilogy as of ME2 and won't be doing anything for ME3 not too long ago. We just didn't have a confirmation.

Sounds like they were true. Shame, I really liked the work he and this collaborators did on ME1 and 2.

I'll just skip the people daring to say that Mansell's music is mediocre and ask if this means that Jack Wall has been fired or not.

Mansell isn't bad, though. I look forward to what he has for us.

Did Wall have any experience with sci-fi before ME though?

He's anything but bad, I'm quite familar with his work. However very little of it would be fitting for a Mass Effect game. I hope is renowned versitility comes to the fore.

Well, let's break it down then.
ME3 will be a sci-fi epic. Epic? We got that part covered I think. Sci-fi? Mansell is capable of electronic music.

Well I'm sure the new guy is more than qualified but I still feel a bit upset about this. I love ME and ME2's soundtracks.

Why change a formula thats universally acclaimed? Well generally the answer is: You don't. So maybe theres more to it than we know, perhaps they wanted too much money for the third game, or simply arent available due to other projects.
