If he's working with Wall of Sound, then great. If he's replacing them, not so great.

I sent a tweet to Sam Hulick and he says he's also not working on ME3.

Could you please post it?

Apparently I wasn't the first to ask. His profile: twitter.com/SamHulick

Well there you go, none of the soundtrack composers from ME1 and 2 are working on ME3. *crosses fingers for Clint*

Dear People Who Love Mass Effect -
So...maybe it's time to actually say something?

Working on the Mass Effect series was epic. It was mind-bending, soul-coughing, astral-plane traveling delicious loveliness - all the way. The games themselves are works of art. I wouldn't change one note of it that myself, Sam, David, Richard or Jimmy wrote. As you may have noticed by now, I am not returning to score the final game. The reasons are much too complicated to explain here, but suffice to say that the people at BioWare and I are still friends and we all really still like each other a lot. More importantly, the score for ME3 will be great and even more important than that, the game will liikely be (being BioWare and all) super duper fantastic.
Clint Mansell is cool. Enjoy.
Oh and thanks to everyone for the kind words here and over the years. For those of you who didn't say nice things, that's cool too. I'm still searching for the perfect chord. If you guys see it laying around, let me know, ok?
See you in another game in another crazy universe!

-Jack

I own both ME1 and ME2 soundtracks. I think your work is amazing and I have very much enjoyed it. Thanks for all your hard work, Jack. You will definitely be missed. Image IPB

Hey all, just wanted to say that BioWare's choice of Clint Mansell for ME3 is a great
one, I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job and I'm excited to hear his
treatment of the Mass Effect themes! To answer a couple questions on
Twitter: no, I will not be contributing in any way, unfortunately, and
I'm ok with that. :)

so no sam either... :(

Wishful thinking mode: Maybe they were offered to compose Knights of the Old Republic III.

Yeah, I have no doubt that Clint will make a good OST, but I feel bad for Jack and Sam.

I'm not sure, but from Jack's post, it seems to me that it was a matter of personal issues that led him to stop -- something more than just business stuff.

At any rate, as I've said a few times now, I'm actually glad to have Mansell doing ME3.

Clint Mansell makes the most haunting, soul wrenching, gut stomping soundtracks know to man. I'm overjoyed to hear this news. I can't hear the main theme of Requiem without getting chills. This should be epic.

I liked Jack Wall and Sam Hulick...it just won't feel the same without their musical scores in the game.

Mansell is great. But a ME without Jack Wall ?
I'm shocked.

This TBH, now after two opus a Mass Effect game without Jack Wall is like a Star Wars movie without John Williams.

Seriously how did they come up deciding to replace Jack Wall? I was really expecting the ME trilogy to form a coherent work. Now it certainly does not look good at all with a different composer, no matter how good he is.

I think what made the ME2 soundtrack so great was that Wall of Sound and the devs knew exactly were to make us nostalgic about ME1 and were to get us pumped and looking ahead to the Suicide Mission and beyond. No doubt Mansell can do the latter but what I'm really hoping for is the former. Meeting Wrex on Tuchanka for the first time in ME2 and the last 20 seconds of the game is the perfect example of this.

Mansell is really great composer. It's soundtrack continuity that worries me...
I assume that they will at least use the theme song?! - it's somenthing that makes the game recognizable....

edit:
theme song

I never even noticed the soundtrack of ME2 and certainly never thought of it as special. No offense to Jack Wall. It never struck me as anything but typical and wouldn't even be sure to recognize it if were played for me outside of the game. Mansell on the other hand? Especially if he's working with the Kronos Quartet like usual? I won't be forgetting it.

Mansell is definitely top dog in the composer realm but he has some giant shoes to fill IMO if Wall and Hulick are gone.

I was kind of upset after finding out that Jack Wall would not be composing the score for the next game but when I finally heard Clint Mansell's work, it sounded familiar and he scored one of the best movies I've ever seen (Requiem for a dream, Moon and Black Swan).

I've got to admit Jack Wall got me floored on the "Suicide Mission" track. It was as if that track was the main title for the actual series. In my opinion, Jack Wall did a great job in setting the atmosphere for the second game and now since articles say the third game will be more dramatic with a darker feel; I think Clint Mansell would not disappoint. Nobody's better than the other, they're both great in their own right.

Well I certainly don't want to give anyone the impression that I'm against Mansell scoring ME3 for many of the reasons stated above. I actually prefer classic orchestral movie scores, primarily ones from the 80s and 90s, to most game music and most modern film music. I'd actually like the Mass Effect 3 score to go in a more classical/orchestral direction, as an extension of what was already occurring in Mass Effect 2. I just don't think of Mansell as a very good example of classical orchestral scoring.

Which is one of the reasons they should just get the guys of ME1 back. The synthetic sound doesn't have all the requirements of classical scoring to sound awesome.
