Seriously, what is it with all you hipster kids hatin' on everything?
(Of course, like I mentioned before, it'll be interesting to see what Clint brings to the table.)

I just listened to the Mansell stuff... not impressed at all. So at the moment, I can't really say that I'm looking forward to MassEffect 3 as much as I did before reading about Jack Wall leaving.
So you just listened to more than fifteen years of Clint's music ranging across all genres, including his couple dozen soundtracks?
Impressive.

ME2's soundtrack was a complete bomb. Generic, uninspired material that could have been the soundtrack to any game/movie/TV show released in the past ten years, if you remove the songs that were brought over from ME1. Having said that, ME2's generic soundtrack followed the pattern set forth by the game itself. Generic, generic, generic.

Hey Mansell, is that you? Cut the astro-turfing and leave the folks alone who don't like your stuff as much as you'd like them to.

I can not express how unbelievably disappointed I am at this news.
Maybe they can reuse the music from 1 and 2 and just have this guy write the filler stuff? I've listened to all the links, and I'm just not impressed.
I was kind of down that they didn't go with a different composer for Dragon Age, 'cause I think Inon Zur is generic, but I was looking forward to ME3 and more Wall of Sound. To find out they went generic there, as well, makes me sad.
I wonder if this has something to do with the movie? Maybe the producers wanted a more "mainstream" composer?
Oh well. I shall console myself by believing that Jack Wall won't be doing ME3 because he is gearing up to score Jade Empire 2(Yes, I know I'm living in Fantasyland. Let me dream for a while.
)
Mansell is far from mainstream in his choices. On the other hand the ME soundtracks are as generic as you can get. I really don't get how all you folks are so high on this guy Wall. I've been listening to particular songs on youtube and I don't even remember hearing them in the game. There just typical, meh. Mansell on the other hand is amazing and brings power and mood and emotion to his work. How anyone can compare the two is beyond me. This should be stunningly awesome news for everybody.
And PS, you don't hire Clint Mansell to write "filler stuff".

Yeah, totally bombed. Yours is definitely the most troll worthy post so far in this thread, even amongst the people who really doubt Clint's ability for ME3.
"Sound track to any game, movie or tv show in the last 10 years"
Hahahahaha.
Hurr, it ate all my links.

What is it, in your mind, that makes me a hipster? The fact that I don't like ME2 as much as I like ME1? Or is it the fact that I'm familar with Clint Mansell? Seriously, I've simply never understood the term or how you classify it.
Mass Effect 2, was, by majority accounts, a much more generic game, as was it's soundtrack. That's fact. The entire experience felt very streamlined when compared to ME1.
Anyyyyyway, the point is, Mansell has been hired and even if you question the decision now, I have full confidence he's going to erase those doubts when the game is released. He's going to own this.

Even still, I think a good deal of Mansell's film work would function equally well as absolute music, and I can happily listen to some of it on its own. I don't expect everyone to share my preferences, but saying that a composer like Mansell is "Hollywood" or "mainstream" or "generic" only shows that you haven't even bothered to inform yourself about his work before forming opinions.

Dear People Who Love Mass Effect -
So...maybe it's time to actually say something?
Working on the Mass Effect series was epic. It was mind-bending, soul-coughing, astral-plane traveling delicious loveliness - all the way. The games themselves are works of art. I wouldn't change one note of it that myself, Sam, David, Richard or Jimmy wrote. As you may have noticed by now, I am not returning to score the final game. The reasons are much too complicated to explain here, but suffice to say that the people at BioWare and I are still friends and we all really still like each other a lot. More importantly, the score for ME3 will be great and even more important than that, the game will liikely be (being BioWare and all) super duper fantastic.
Clint Mansell is cool. Enjoy.
Oh and thanks to everyone for the kind words here and over the years. For those of you who didn't say nice things, that's cool too. I'm still searching for the perfect chord. If you guys see it laying around, let me know, ok?
See you in another game in another crazy universe!
-Jack

I'll give you the first half of Tali's theme. But take a listen; it has much more of a ME1 feel and about halfway through it just becomes another 'action' theme that really could be attached to any type of media involving a shootout.
Troll has GOT to be the most over-used word on the internet. As soon as someone posts an opinion that hilites any negative aspect of what they're talking about, that person immediately becomes a troll. It's almost comical.
Then combine that with the fact that I came on here strictly to voice my opinion on how excited I am about the fact that Mansell has been attached to ME3, and the title of Troll just doesn't make any sense.

We'll agree to disagree on your thoughts on ME2 OST.

Good for you. But I'm just curious.... what would you have Bioware do if the Jack Wall and Co. wanted to move onto something else?

**********
I had to log in just to express my utter disdain for this decision from Bioware. I have nothing against Clint Mansell. I like his work.
But...
Mass Effect is a trilogy. Mass Effect is a series of games that is supposed to be based on your choices carrying over from one game to the next. The entire point of Mass Effect is its narrative/thematic continuity.
And with this choice, Bioware, you just took a steaming dump on all of that.
Music is as important an element to a series as returning characters, recurring story themes, and creative staff behind the game. It is one of the most important elements because audio is one of the key ways a player will interact with the game.
With Jack Wall, you had two games' worth of great material ready, like the storyline, to be woven into a conclusion. Much like the impact of hearing the Ilos theme when Ashley/Kaidan showed up at the end of the Colony Rescue mission or the familiar 'bom bom...bom bom..." of the Mass Effect theme cueing up at the end of ME2, ME3 would have been an amazing narrative filled with new pieces, old themes, and variations on old themes that fit the story being told. Music defines the experience as much as Shepard, Wrex, Mordin, and the rest.
And you threw all of it away. You threw it away for, as best I can tell, a "name". I wouldn't feel differently if you had hired John Williams, Hans Zimmer, or James Horner. They have as much to do as Clint Mansell has to do with the Mass Effect trilogy: nothing. Jack Wall and his crew's work *was* this trilogy. Theirs was the music the defined the experience, and theirs was the music that should have wrapped up this storyline. This is such a staggering creative mistake. I would love for someone from Bioware to explain to me how this decision makes any sense, but I know all I would get is a pleasantly presented public relations lie.
We all know that Mass Effect will live beyond ME3, so what was the rush, Bioware? Why would you throw away two games' worth of wonderful musical narrative for a third score wholly separate from the players' previous experience? What sense does that make? How does that help Mass Effect 3? It doesn't. If there's any way to gracefully back out of this, I would encourage you to do it. I'm guessing there's not, and it's a damned shame. You have any # of future Mass Effect titles you could have used Mansell on. You started something good with ME1, and you should have seen it through til the end.
