Is it just me, but in comparison to ME1, wasn't ME2 a bit less "sci-fi" or less "synth" in terms of music? To me ME2 was more of that genric hardcore action game.

Oh for sure.  I'm a bit disappointed that seems to be the trend as well for ME3, which is why I loved it, as it was so un-mainstream for games.  Oh well.  Guess I am just part of the minority.

As much as I loved the ME2 soundtrack, I do like ME1's more. It had a more "clean" feel to it, stripped from unneccessary orchestrial mega..ness? (God I'm terrible at english right now, my sincerest apologies ).

I love Jack Wall and Sam Hulick, but maybe Clint Mansell can shift the gear a bit in ME3. Could be interesting.

Jack,

I absolutely loved your work in ME and ME2. The song "Vigil" is the theme for Mass Effect, I get goosebumps every time I hear it. Mass Effect and Demon's Souls are my top two favorite game soundtracks. Thank you for the awesome tunes.

Dear god. After listening to some of the links in this thread, my love affair with Jack Wall can be happily replaced with this guy.

This game needs to be as epic as physically possible, and Mr. Mansell is a step in the right direction.

How can a bit of news be so great and still bittersweet. Okay. I would like to express my greatest love for Jack Wall, he's done an amazing work for ME1+2. I hope he gets to collaborate with BioWare in the future. As for Mass Effect 3? First, I have to say I appreciate the fact that BW is making bold moves and taking some chances. And bringing Clint Mansell to the team as composer? What could be better. Love Clint Mansell, his work for The Fountain... Outstanding. Moon? Great and atmospheric. I can hardly wait to listen to his approach to the game's soundtrack. So kudos BioWare and welcome Mr. Mansell. Now let's get that game ready!!! Want it so bad.......

Seriously I'd like a game where Garrus and a female cyborg track down drug cartels on the Citadel. It could take place mostly on the Citadel then take them across the galaxy where red sand is created. I am a huge fan of Miami Vice and a fan of Jan Hammer's work on the show.

I just watched Requiem of a Dream, Moon and Black Swan again today. The score was awesome, I was in tears not just by the sound but how beautiful the film was with the music. Good job Bioware!

Is orchestrial epicness ever a bad thing?  I think it's important to try to understand why there was this difference. Personally, I suspect the reason ME2 had more of this type of music is simply because there were far more cinematic cutscenes, which, I imagine, was a refreshing opportunity for the Wall of Sound team.  I'm no composer, but I suppose that outside of cutscenes, the restriction is that all you can do is create a loopable track that's fairly homogenous such that when the character does something important, the next track will fit into it at any point.  That's probably the clean-ness you're talking about.

But yeah, I think Clint Mansell can take their work and take it to the next level as I'm sure they would have.

I think orcestra doesn't really fit with Sci-fi games. Only certain scenes.

But synthy songs like the ones on Eden prime, Ilos and stuff. Makes the game alot awesome

Now, I was thinking about games, not movies.
Movies are great with orchestra music.

Star Wars is also a distinctly classical in its sound compared to most modern orchestra soundtracks that mix in electronics instruments with real ones and lean heavily on "epic" - that is plain sound volume, repetitive themes and as much drums and percussions as possible. Hans Zimmer, yeah, I'm speaking about you.

People seem to love it and most casual listeners will describe a good soundtrack as "epic". Just look at the thread and you'll see that's the only and simple criteria for most people.

Hell, I want Mansell to go on a different, less tried and more difficult approach. A subdued, deep and restrained sound that can convey emotion without exhausting you with a repetitive theme and literally a wave of loud sounds.

I love Moon. It's a fantastic retro sci-fi movie. I'm a bit bothered that I don't remember the score, but maybe that's a plus - in the end a soundtrack should not feel as a different part from the visual experience but rather a single whole. I'm going to listen and see if I like, thanks to those who pointed it out.

EDIT: Had-to-say, that piece was great. :D

Clearly we are talking about taste and taste differs. Video game music in it's infancy was all about a loop of beeps and tweets. I find it fitting that the best game in the industry doesn't completely seIl out to mainstream media with movie music. I find Mass Effect pays some what a homage to this style of music when video games were in it's early stages when storage and memory was limited.

Sure we can get big name composers to do the music. See I still prefer 8-bit video game music over most of the modern stuff. Most of Mass Effect's constituents were born in or around the 80's so that style of music and what was being played in sci- fi action hits a sentimental core which I hope is not lacking in ME3.

This is a gamble for Bioware and I will point to the more orchestrated portions of Mass Effect 2 as my only problem with Wall.

Daft Punk was onto something with the score for Tron. I was in love with that soundtrack.

I am not trying to say one is better than the other but I just have my tastes. I would like some orchestrated music in the game in the right proportions. But please make love to the 80's it is a prerequiste for what Wall has already done.  I grew up with Pacman.

Listening to Moon's soundtrack now. I am optimistic. I had forgotten how amazing the music in that movie was and how much it was a retro-futuristic mix.

This isn't the end of the world.

I loved Jack Wall's work with Mass Effect, but what are the chances that none of his tracks are returning? I'm sure music he already composed will appear in the game, like Uncharted Worlds when you access the galaxy map, or the main theme when you start the game.

And Clint Mansell is an excellent composer who has done work in the Sci Fi genre before, and will fit in nicely with the Mass Effect universe. The style of the game's soundtrack isn't going to radically change.

Listen to this track that Mansell composed for the movie Moon:

There are parts of Welcome to Lunar Industries that sound very similar in style to the Mass Effect soundtrack.

Star Wars isn't sci-fi.

Then neither is ME.

They're both space operas.  Neither are hard sci-fi but they definetely are soft sci-fi.

Just listened to the Moon Soundtrack. I think we're in good hands :)

As long as we stay away from ME2's musical ambiance, because I didn't like the soundtrack of that game very much.

Star Wars has futuristic technology, space travel, droids, aliens, all the stuff you'd expect in sci-fi.  Which makes me wonder why you're saying it isn't sci-fi.

That said, the soundtrack for Halo 3 was performed by an orchestra, and I think the soundtrack for Halo: Reach was too. IMHO, having an orchestra do a game soundtrack makes it that much more epic.

This is a really underated piece of music. I like the chaos and terror in this movie and in this music.
Synthesizers can be really powerful.

I'm not denying that. I love what Daft Punk did with the Tron: Legacy score, and my brother creates some awesome songs using only his computer (and sometimes his voice). I'm simply saying that orchestrated music has worked for some epic sci-fi games in the past, and I'm guessing it will probably work for ME3.

I don't care how good this new guy is. I don't like this change.
