Jack Wall's music has certainly added positively to the experience but Clint Mansell will do even better. His resume is really impressive and his music has been a main attraction to a lot of great movies. I don't recall him ever scoring a video game before so this is a huge honor. I know he puts 100% into all his projects so I promise you he will not disappoint. I'm very excited for the OST.

Resurrecting thread a wee bit because of this new article:-

Mass Effect 2 composer Jack Wall explains his departure from the franchise

The main comment/point:-

"Well, I've had a great relationship with BioWare for five years, and I  think, you know, as with any important relationship it's complicated," Wall said. "Now I'm working with other clients and it feels fresh to me and I think they feel the same way, so I think it's just time to move on. I have nothing but love for those people. I'm sure I'll see them
again. It's just time for a break, maybe."

I was right about to post this. Hopefully people will stop saying or implying Bioware/EA "fired" Wall. He says pretty clearly that he wanted to do something else.

People will never stop blaming EA for whatever big or small thing they don't like.

I think this topic deserves a bump....

If anyone wants an idea what ME3 may sound like, go watch MOON. It's a space movie (duh) scored by Clint Mansell.

Good stuff

Thanks for brining this back up. Clint Mansell certainly has a very interesting sound and should be great for Mass effect. The composers so far have done a fantastic job and I'm sure Mr Mansell will also do a fantastic job going by the works linked from this thread.

I think the Moon soundtrack is great, but it serves an entirely different purpose compared to what Mass Effect needs. Moon is a movie about solitude and loneliness, a theme that is portrayed brilliantly in the somber space soundtrack.

Indeed.  I imagine Clint's work for ME3 will sound... well.. Mass Effecty.  But with his own "magic" applied to it...

I hope he'll make something amazing, but it's only going to happen if  ME3 lends itself to it.  His score for the Fountain was so emotionally charged and, erm, spirtually haunting (if that makes sense), but that's because the movie was.

Exactly. After hearing about Clint's involvement and hearing his best work in the Fountain, I just had to watch the actual film. I can see now that Mass Effect 3 will be emotionally epic in many ways, soley based on his musical involvement alone. It is a shame that The Fountain was harshly criticized and bombed in the box office at time of release. Hopefully further down the line, the community will look back and realize the message that it portrayed in the film and classify it as a classic, similar to Blade Runner and Clockwork Orange.

I never said Mass Effect 3 was going to sound like Moon. But Moon is a SPACE film and Mass Effect is a SPACE game. So logically speaking if people were looking for an example of Mansell's work that most closely matches the Mass Effect style, then this is it.

Just sent the request to cancel my preorder.

This is, without a doubt, the worst gaming news I have ever heard.

No Wall of Sound.

No Mass Effect 3 for me, at least not at full price.

If there's no Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, David Kates, and Jimmy Hinson, I can most certainly afford to wait until me3 is in the $10 bargain bin at Wal-Mart.

If Clint Mansell had been the original composer, that would be a different story...but he wasn't.

Yes, I know "everyone" has a hard-on for the music from Requiem For a Dream, but it means nothing to me.
I wouldn't care if John Williams or even Hans Zimmer was composing the music. Mind you, before the Mass Effect 2 Soundtrack, Hans Zimmer was, bar none, my favorite composer. After listening to the Mass Effect 2 Soundtrack, there's a 5-way tie for my favorite composer.

If I wasn't able to be completely objective, however, it'd  only be a 4-way tie, and Jack Wall wouldn't be one of them. But Jack's decision to back out doesn't affect my objectivity, and I can still recognize what a fantastic composer he is. I just wish he and his crack team of fellow composers were composing the music for Mass Effect 3.

Now, if you'll all excuse me.....I'm gonna go throw up.

Please...have you anything meaningful to add? Hell, everyone else who took it upon themselves to taunt me could actually form words into sentences, but I see you would rather rely on the "a picture is worth a thousand words" clause.

Experiment - Clint Mansell's Music in ME2 assignment

Damn you guys are picky.

that sounded god awful to me. It sounded very generic. Not the type of music you'd expect in a bioware game. I'm sure the final game will sound better. But still.

Boring? lol Maybe because it's over a decade old? It's used in so much stuff because it's a classic. No need to be ignorant about it. Daft Punk OST works good for a Disney movie but not for Mass Effect.

it was boring because it was the same thing over again. And just plain isn't that good.

I find it funny how everyone speaks as a different composer will change the music drastically, or how ME3 may sound like the soundtrack of something the new composer did. Things you must understand, is that even if the soundtrack is original music from the writer, he must follow Bioware's guidelines. And anyway, just listen to ME1 and ME2's soundtracks, both are very different yet composed by the same person. The whole ME1 game had hardcore si-fi aesthetics, it's obvious Bioware wanted Wall to compose music that would get along the rest of the game. Again, play ME2 and tell me Bioware didn't took a completely different road in how they told their story and did their cinematics, the music had to reflect that, and it did. I'm not saying a change of composer is nothing, just that it won't change the music style drastically. Yes the style will be different up to a certain point, but depending on the aesthetic Bioware wants, you never know, maybe any composer could do.

Maybe it was "the same thing over and over again" in 30 second commercials or edited youtube videos but if you bothered to listen to the actual soundtrack it originally appeared in, you'd see that isn't the case.

It baffles me when people are so quick to judge when they don't know what on earth they're even talking about.

Hypocrite much?

Daft Punk is incredible, Tron was just their latest work.  And they're French too, so Bioware would love them.

I like Daft Punk. But they don't belong in Mass Effect. Unless they're in my squad.

Ehh, pretty good.  I guess I was just hoping for more electronica and less orchestra... but it's totally up to Bioware.

I advise to watch the movie Smokin 'Aces, on the subject of the movie a lot of main characters who throughout the film are being killed. Is not that what we expect from ME3?
And the music in the film is very atmospheric going on ... Is not that what we expect from Clint Mansell ..?
so I advise to get acquainted ;)

I love Moon, but WHY do so many people think ME3 will sound like it????

I never said Mass Effect 3 was going to sound like Moon. But Moon is a SPACE film and Mass Effect is a SPACE game. So logically speaking if people were looking for an example of Mansell's work that most closely matches the Mass Effect style, then this is it.

The logic is undeniable!  :P  Seriously though, that's the thing, isn't it?  Just because they're both set in space doesn't mean they'll sound the same.  Sure, there will probably be some similarities, but unless ME3 has the same themes, they'll probably sound quite different, overall.  Moon is very slow paced and has a lot of loneliness, which is why I think it's highly unlikely that ME3 will sound like it.  At best there might be some similar atmosphere music in places... but I can't see ME3 sounding much like it otherwise.  If it's a highly emotional and epic game, I'd think something very Mass Effecty multiplied by the type of thing he did for the Fountain would be more likely... but who knows.. I won't fully discount the possibility of ME3 sounding like Moon, but given how different the themes are between Moon and the previous ME games, the fact that they're both set in space isn't enough for me to expect ME3 to sound like it.

Also, it's not the only sci-fi he's done.  E.g. there's "The Fountain" and "Doom."
