They came from Korcari Wilds, and were defeated... to reach Kirkwall they had to cross the sea, it's a long way...
so how come we find more Darkspawn in DA2? What do you think they're doing?

Well we will encounter them while escaping Lothering, any time we're in the Deep Roads. Even when the Archdemon was defeated there were still warring tribes of them.

You've played Awakenings, surely you know by now they weren't really defeated in DA:O?

Yes, but they stay in the Deep Roads and don't come to the surface without the CALLING of the Archdemon, and he was killed...

They didn't stay in the Deep Roads in Awakening...

You're assuming the darkspawn will be a major enemy after the first couple of acts? Probably not.

We've only seen Darkspawn on the surface in the escape from Lothering, when the blight is still on.

Yes they do. They're just not very wel organized / in smaller numbers without an archdeamon to give them directions.

And then there's the stuff from Awakening...

Well they live in the old dwarven Theigs, and those theigs often had ways to reach the surface, and were spread far and wide under the earth. There are probably occasional ones coming up to the surface, or straglers who got lost during the blight and ended up just roaming. After all, this is a pre-industrial world, people don't cover every square inch of every country, it'd be easy for them to wander around without being spotted if they're in small groups rather than a giant horde.

small bands of darkspawn exist on the surface regardless of a blight or no blight. Only large armies appear during a blight.

There are always darkspawn in the Deep Roads. Only in Blights when an Archdemon leads them they come to the surface. I think they naturally shy the daylight. Well or if the Architect or some of his failed experiments drag them to the surface.

I'm pretty SURE in Orzammar the dwarves say darkspawn don't come out to the surface without an Archdemon... (i'm playing for the 4th time Origins right now...)

but Wulfsturm U R right, in Awakening they ARE on the surface...

As I understand it, the Archdemons cause the Blights and the big surges of Darkspawn on the surface, but there are still raiding parties and attacks on humans between the big wars. If they were only ever on the surface during Blights, why would Loghain and Cailen been so dismissive of Duncan?

I'm kinda assuming that the overall story is going to roll on, and while that might not actively involve a blight or anything, it and they have got to be a part of whatever it was that flemeth and morrigan could see coming.

what if they were awakened in some other way? (did you see what I did there?)

They're travelin' in your cities, snatching your people up, tryin' to kill them

So ya'll need to hide your kids, kid your wife, and hide your Qunari cause the darkspawn are rapin' everybody up here.

Yea they do come to the surface in small disorganized raids usually.

Yes...so that means technically they don't need to wait for an Archdemon to come to the surface.

As far as we know they only appear at the start in Lothering, where their presence makes sense.

The Architect is dead though or somewhere deep under the earth with his flock.

From the Epilogue

Even though the horde of darkspawn are dispersed after the Archdemon's defeat, the strongest among them may reorganize into roving war bands, preying upon the land and each other. Some even make it as far as Orlais before they are eventually defeated.  dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Epilogue

It's implied in Awakening that Archdemons are all but completely irrelevant for the most part.

All they need is a leader, that could be anyone from The Architect, to a Broodmother, to a Disciple, to some crazy human/ghoul.

deep roads exits are all over Thedas. and i don't think they're being led by anything, but it hasn't been confirmed or denied by the devs. i don't think its even been asked
