I don't feel like searching for info years old, but I believe darkspawn have always came to the surface occasionally, whether there was a arch daemon calling them or not. They were just pests and nuisances on the level of a group of bandits, not a kingdom crushing army.

The obvious answer is that art and animations are time consuming and cost money. I have no problem with filler encounters that involved existing art assets. I do hope little of the main story involves Dark Spawn, other than they are obviously a threat in any underground adventure.

so how come we find more Darkspawn in DA2? What do you think they're doing?

Yes, but they stay in the Deep Roads and don't come to the surface without the CALLING of the Archdemon, and he was killed...

WELL if the dwarves are making more headway underground and if the area's south of Kirkwall are doing a good job eradicating DS, then it would make sense for them to flee north.

"Archdemons don't awaken on their own, you know. It takes the darkspawn, tunneling and tunneling, searching for centuries, to find one. And with no one to lead them, it must be sheer chance, or maybe instinct which leads them. What's surprising isn't that it takes so long between Blights; what's surprising is that they succeed at all. But I imagine the old gods call to them, and it's that voice in the darkness which drives them through so many generations." ―Riordan

(I know at least a page probably already said this).  Well, seeing how the Hawke family is fleeing from Lothering (you know, the city that was destroyed and overrun in the first game?) at the same time as the blight is occurring...well, Im sure that you can see where Im going with this :)

Post blight pub crawl, it's traditional for all the darkspawn to have one.

Read the codex entries, in the Anderfel's the wardens are so popular because darkspawn are a CONSTANT threat. Darkspawn will raid the surface from time to time, and they inhabit the deep roads all the time. So dwarves and any underground expedition will see lots of darkspawn, and the areas around the Anderfels have lots of darkspawn incursions. Plus the epilogue in DAO said many bands of darkspawn went through the deep roads and rampaged around the free marches. The darkspawn arent completely gone if there isnt a blight.

YES! YES! YES! I' M NOT THAT FOOL, OK?

But we do see Darkspawn at the BEGINNING of the game, in the intro... and that's THE END of the DA2 story, the end of the LEGEND when Hawke is the Champion.

Well, then you're certainly an expert on the plot and the context in which the scene appears.

No...the intro where you see Hawke beating up all sorts of Darkspawn and an Ogre and then Flemeth swoops (yes swoops) down is set in Lothering.  There are two versions of it, the initial version that Varric tells is an exaggerated version (the story of Hawke the legend).  Varric gets called on it and then tells the other version (the story of Hawke the man).  So, as I stated, it's at the beginning of Hawkes story, not the end of things...

No, it's the begining of the Legend, extremely exagerated by a dwarf with lots of chest hair. Not the end.

NO, no, no...

that scene is set on the mountains... and Lothering is plain... moreover the landscape doesn't really look like Lothering.

You see Lothering in the Rise to power Trailer... Hawke is fleeing with is family from there...

HAIR DWARF IS EXAGERATING! And plus fleeing Lothering means leaving the plains. And afterwards we get to hear Cassandra call BS on the Hairy Dwarf.
