Hello all

I bought Mass Effect 1 for PC a while back and since then I've been having numerous issues with the audio. From what I understand the problem is quite common but I have yet to find a solution. I've tried everything I can think of. I've switched to Software sound and tried the BioEngine.ini 64/62 thing. My audio drivers are up to date...

Before I had a problem where the dialogue would cut off at the end of most sentences, but the BioEngine solution seemed to fix that. I'm still getting a TON of crackling and popping though, not only in dialogue but it happens almost constantly while I'm walking around.

It's really difficult to play the game with the annoying popping everywhere. Can anyone help me out so I can get back to enjoying this GREAT game?

Thanks

Give us your system specs as per this thread, and we'll see what we can do to help. Until then, theres not much we can do to help diagnise the problem.

First thing to try would be download and install DirectX9.0c from MS website. Steam -should- have installed it, but the Steam version is giving a few people strange errors.

Next thing is to set audio in the config utility for software, rather than hardware.

Try digging in that thread some.

Another thing you can try is right clicking on your speaker mixer icon in the bar in the lower right corner.

Right click playback devices, right click speakers, choose properties.

Click advanced and try different playback formats like 16bit 48khz if that doesn't do anything try another one and see if it improves or worsens.

Okay I've installed DirectX9.0c and tried switching back and forth between hardware and software audio, and I've attempted Herethos's suggestion. So far it hasn't changed. It mostly cracks at the beginning or near the end of a line of dialogue, but it also happens a lot when I'm entering a new area after loading, or when I'm on an elevator. And somewhat frequently when I'm walking around

I had the same thing but only on my Creative soundcard. Realtek had no issues whatsoever (except lack of surround sound).

Just to be clear, are you using the Realtek or the built-in sound card from your Radeon?

Hmmm I'm not quite sure. How would I find out?

Sorry, I'm somewhat new to PC gaming and I'm still learning the ropes

Download and run this utility:
http://www.thesycon....ncy_check.shtml
Read whats on the page it should explain how it works.

Thread related to Microsoft Essentials.

I don't know how often ME2 uses the network to verify any dlc's installed against the server, but the network usage shouldn't be that heavy.

I guess the main reasons for the audio pops/crackles are due to drivers/codecs.

I'm not sure mobile Radeons even have built-in audio. You can tell by right clicking the speaker icon in Windows and then clicking on playback devices.

There are 3 things listed:

-ATI HDMI Output
 ATI High Definition Audio Device
 Not plugged in

-Speakers
 Realtek High Definition Audio
 Default Device

-Realtek Digital Output
 Realtek High Definition Audio
 Ready

That means you're using the Realtek. I still have no idea how to fix it, though.
