Hi guys,
I'm starting a new Dalish mage and trying to make her a SS (DEX) for RP reasons i.e. all Dalish train with a bow and my mage (named Gwen) is no exception... Does any one have any hints/ tips for playing a bow wielding mage?

Literal!
It's a mod that allows Dalish (start in woods) or Dwarf (tower) mages... that is the link.
I figure that low CUNN will make passing persuade checks hard but that fits because lets face it, nobody likes us... taking AW later will cover the lack of STR & is acceptable with the way we feel about lost lore.

The game says that dwarfs can't use magic because they spend all that time underground with lyrium but what about the surface dwarfs?

I have absolutely no knowledge about shapeshifters or even bow mages, sorry.
But I love to go further off topic with what you mentioned about dwarves... ^^
IMHo it could also be possible there emerge mages from surface dwarves. They are said to loose the stone sense, which means they are no longer bound or restricted to it. And the game shows us that dwarves can also enter the fade... defenitely something interesting to think about.
Other games - many fantasy worlds actually - are often quite similar to DA when describing dwarves. Most of the time they are not able to wield magic. In the lore of some games tough dwarves can become what is often called a "Gode" - which is actually a real world historic term, referring to norse wise men iirc - who can use some kind of rune magic. The Lord of the Rings Online does have such a class, also the Drakensang games which are based on The Dark Eye pen & paper.
I really miss that class choice in DA, it works in other games with quite similar lore. The same for elven mages, or "Keepers". Although it would have been cooler if they were more like the conventional classic Druid class. You can learn to be a Keeper in Awakening and I think it is a pity you that can't in Origins...
But isn't there any way to bring the Awakening classes and spells to Origins? That would be something, something rather cool, despite the fact that there won't be an origin story for it.
I wanted to play a dwarf for my second playthrough, but I also wanted a mage, so I had to play a "circle elf". When I finish this char I will definitely try that mod. Thanks for that link!

There is such a mod at nexus, where all talents/skills/spells etc. from Awakening are available at Origins. But I don't think they decreased the prereqs. So if wanna go keeper you have to be lvl 21 (right?).

Why not just do a dexterity/magic split? Since you'll be taking arcane warrior (and you'll need all the attack you can get), dexterity is your best bet to boost both defense and attack score.
You have the choice of either having dexterity or magic higher, depending on the type of arcane warrior you're going for.

Dwarves are incapable of being mages. Even surface dwarves.
There is a loop hole however, a Dwarf can be a Blood Mage. Dwarves cant create a connection to the Fade and so are unable to use Mana. A Blood Mage his own lifeforce to power his spells. Hence Dwarf Blood Mage.
Dahlish Mage, grab the shapeshifter mod here and go all points magic if your doing Shapeshifter. The mod makes it give better stats to your forms the higher spellpower you have.

Use this mod if you want the Awakening Talents in Orgins at level 7...

Mage with a Bow....what does this remind me of.... oh I know ! Phantasy Star ! Force Bow Users !
Im not sure how I feel on the RP aspect of this, why do i shoot arrows when I can shoot lightning? Also you can get a small loophole with Arcane Warrior and use a Crossbow (Crossbow is Str, not dex). I can agree with this if your mostly going to be a debilitaror, stuns, mezz hold, that sorta of thing.

Update;
I have completed Loverang but my Dalish mage is having a hard time of it.
Told that bible basher Leliana to take a hike & had to frighten the supreme mother with the threat of attack in order to release Sten but on the up side dog “Mangy” is very accommodating when it comes to my (laundry) needs.
I’m currently in Redcliff about to gut the Arlessa… Alistair is not a happy camper!
p.s.
I carry both a staff & a bow... the rabbit tastes better if I cook it slowly.
