Okay, sorry this was in the wrong forum, it was my bad I didn't know there were six thousand rules, please forgive my incolense(and poor spelling).
So my probelm is that the game crashes faily often, and goes all the way to desktop with the windows "This stopped working, we don't know way" box. It can restart after that happens easy enough, but it is a little depressing when you lose 3 quests of Orzamar because each quest takes a year and a half.  There is no pattern, like if I go to a certain area, speak to a certain party member, or anthing like that, sometimes I can play for 4 hours no problem, and other times it will crash 2 or three times, within an our of starting the game.
Anyway, this is a newish computer, I bought the latest copy "Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition" for the PC and have all the patches. (1.04, and 1.1 for Witch Hunt)
My computer stats are as follows...
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor: Processor Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz, 2801 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Memory: Total Physical Memory(RAM) 8.00GB
Available Physical Memory 7.96GB
Total Virtual Memory 15.9GB
Available Virtual Memory 12.8GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Hard Drive Space: Way To Much, at least 960 GB
Sound Card: Realteck High Definition Audio
I believe that was all you requested, let me know if I did something else wrong. Thank you for your time.

First: be sure that you have DirectX 9.0c by downloading and installing it here.  DirectX 11, which comes pre-installed on Windows 7, is not backwards compatible with DirectX 9.0c.

Secondly, update your graphics card drivers here.  AMD's December 2010 drivers included a performance fix for Dragon Age which might help.

There already have been two previous (but incomplete) threads begun that were based upon the readers here all being magical creatures able to diagnose problems without any information.  One was in the General Subjects forum, where the need for the missing data was intitially remarked upon.

Okay, Thanks, I just
attempted to post all of that onto the right forum, but it didn't load
or someting, because I was "not logged in" Do you happen to have a
problem with this site signing you out after you leave a page, even to a
new one on the same site?

I've never had such a problem.  I don't understand what you are doing.  There is only one PC Tech Forum, this message thread is where it belongs now.

Now there are three message threads.

Gorath,

So the kid obviously posted the specs as request, only he did it in a new thread.  SSV Enterprise is attempting to help him.  I'll chime in if I can think of anything to help him.  Interrupting this conversation thread serves no purpose.  If the original poster's done something wrong, report him to the moderators.  There's no need to hijack a thread to make your point.  It's feckless and belies the maturity and deep technical knowledge you've displayed elsewhere.

Thanks for posting your specs.  This helps, because it shows you more than meet the minimum game specs.  I think SSV Enterprise's suggestions are good ones.  I'd also encourage you to make sure you're copy of Windows 7 is up to date.  I also suggest you make sure you don't have an 3rd party mods or any other programs running in the background while playing.

Once you've tried some of these suggestions, let us know how they're going, and we'll troubleshoot some more.

Regards,

RI

p.s.  As you've probably guessed by now, this site is inhabited only by fellow gamers.  You can also send a message directly to Electronic Arts through their official online help, which is at support.ea.com.

Okay, thanks a lot guys, I did need to update my graphics card driver, and I downloaded the "new" (meaning old) DirectX 9.0c. I haven't had any problems so far, and I will let you know if I do. By the way, I'm of course only thanking RaenImrahl and SSV Enterprise, because you actualy care about helping people, instead of how far you can shove a stick up your as and pretending to own a website. (yeah Gorath, that last part was about you, incase you didn't understand it without any specs and rules)

Thanks again!

Hey guys, the game has been working fine, but it just charshed about 2 minutes ago, the same thing happening.  I don't know if you can offer any more ideas...would the "good old" uninstall and reinstall help?

First I'd fiddle with graphics settings.  See if the game runs smoothly without vertical sync.  Lower (or disable) enchancements in the catalyst software.  Consider lowering the in-game antialiasing.  And, of course, save often. :)

I remember this game used to run solid hardly with any crashes, I used to play 11 hours non-stop, then the 1.03 update came for Awakening and now I am experiencing crashes, usually while fighting. One solution is to assign the affinity to one core, the game has never crashed running on 1 core instead of 3 but the graphics are bad. Waiting for an update from Bioware to make the game stable again.

How do assign the affinity to one core? I'm not sure what that means...but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Run the game.

Hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete

Select task manager

Goto the processes tab

Find the Dragon age exe.

Right click on it and look for the affinity setting and set it to 1 core for dual core (core zero I believe.)

For quad core (your system) select cores 3 and 4.

Go back to your game.

You'll need to do this every time you run the game.

Well, I've been running it on "one core" I think, and it has been working well! however, the way the numbers break up, the cores would be paired 0-1 2-3 4-5 6-7...so I have it on 4-5. Thank you very much :)
