So, I'm on my second playthrough now and have just passed the Landsmeet. I let Alistair fight Loghain in the duel and he afterwords killed him.

However, now at Redcliffe the dialogue points to Loghain being alive. When he's supposed to speak, the camera zooms to where I suppose he would be (but of course he isn't there) and his lines play. I can't even use Loghain in my party because he's not even physically there, just an invisible ghost speaking for him. And of course, I have no access to Alistair anymore.

Similar thing happened in my first playthrough, when Alistair kept talking about how he was now the King, despite me not supporting him in favor of Anora. But at least this didn't really affect my gameplay. This time it does, though, since I'm essentially down another companion for absolutely no real reason :(

Am I screwed, or is there any way to fix this? I'm currently downloading the toolset hoping there's some way to do it there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, that's a serious bug. You're going to have to reload from before the Landsmeet and play it again, I'm afraid. The toolset isn't going to help. Even if it could, I guarantee you that it'll be faster just to do the Landsmeet again. The ruler confusion is a common bug that doesn't actually affect anything, as you noted. This is something bigger and probably indicates a larger problem like corrupted data of some kind.

Ok, these are separate bugs. Are you sure you dont' have access to Alistair? Double check that one. If you do, then you are fine.

The "alistair as king" when he's not is a known bug, but doesn't affect a thing. there is no dialog in place that accounts for him NOT being king, so in an unmodded game, you always get that if he's still with your party.

If you have access to Alistair now, then what is going on in that conversation at Redcliff is there are four or five dialogs that are incorrectly coded and you get Loghain speaking from the dead if Alistair is not king.  If he is king, there's still one there that is incorrectly coded.

If you don't have access to Alistair, then you need to replay the landsmeet.

What mods are you using? Any mod that changes the actual landsmeet can cause this bug (Alistair disappearing, Loghain dead but treated as alive) if you're not using patch version 1.03 of DAO.  There's one mod that several people have reported this with (Qwinn's) though I believe a couple others can cause it as well.

I strongly recommend using my mod, ZDF, though it won't make Alistair reappear. there is a console command, i believe, that will allow you to recruit any party member.

I ran across this bug. I intended Alistair to kill Loghain so my Warden could marry Anora, but while Anora said what she was supposed to at the Landsmeet, the quest update said that Alistair was king. However, the epilogue recognised Anora as queen but not me having married her. Needless to say, it ruined my game and I had to go back and spare Loghain to get the desired outcome, although I didn't want to lose Alistair. It's the worst bug I've come across in any game. This is on the x box; not sure if it occurs on other platforms.

It does, unfortunately.  Alistair calling himself king, though, has nothing to do with flags being set and all.  Seriously.  In the DR conversation with him, there is no alternative -- he just says it no matter what, it has nothing to do with what decision was made.

I wonder about Anora, though.  Was that an older version of the game?  This is why mods that change the landsmeet can really mess up people who use older versions -- the flags were changed at some point.

David Gaider claimed to have written non-king dialog for it. Another dev said it was a bug that would probably get fixed. That was about a year ago, so obviously they will not be fixing it.

The dialog is not in the toolset.  It may have been written and recorded, but it never made it to the point where it could be put in the game.  There are mods that fix it, and we all fix it in different ways.  But for people on consoles, they're SoL.

First day purchase I think. The bugged playthrough was quite recent, and if I understand you correctly you are saying that if I'd played it earlier I might not have had a problem?

Other way around.  Hmmmm.  I know 1.03 changed some things -- I'll have to look to see waht would cause that in the more recent versions.

Hey, thanks for all the replies!

@ejoslin: I definitely had no access to Alistair whatsoever. Whether at party selections, or anywhere at the Redcliffe castle. I was indeed using Qwinn's with a 1.03 DAO, but I disabled it a while back since I couldn't really see a difference from my first playthrough (or maybe I wasn't paying enough attention). So it was definitely disabled for the Landsmeet.

@errant_knight: I managed to finish downloading and installing the toolset last night before your reply, but attempting to load the save file just gave me an out of memory error. So, yeah, it wouldn't help anyways ><

As per your guys' suggestions, I replayed the Landsmeet (which I loathe - I find the duel so tedious :() from an autosave before posting this. I chose the exact same dialogue, but this time everything saved properly (Loghain was seen as dead and Alistair was seen as still being with me).

So yay, bugs. Thanks for all the help offered

Ah, I'm glad replaying the landsmeet worked.  I still suggest ZDF, but that's just me :D

Well, don't feel like you wasted your time! You can do lots of fun things with that toolset. Here's a good place for tutorials:
http://social.biowar.../wiki/datoolset

And the toolset section of the forum is a great place to ask for help. Lots of really nice people there.

NO! That's what I did! I used this cheat... too often I'm afraid. What can I do now?
