I know this would take an immense amount of time, effort, energy and people but, as it's been toted several times before, George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, my favorite fantasy series of all time, is cited as an influence/inspiration for this game. As such, with the powerful toolset, it seems logical to create a campaign mod based on this series or at least A Game of Thrones to start with. Maybe the origins concept can even be utilized by picking different POV characters from the series. Has anyone given this serious though? Hell, has anyone thought about doing serious campaign mods in general? I get the impression that we'll be able to do that but it seems like it would basically be creating a completely new game using the Dragon Age engine.

Be careful with this endeavor. Cyanide studios bought the interactive rights to a Song of Ice and Fire. If you guys want to stand out, you should create something that is inspired by his work but not strictly derived from it.

I made a module for NWN 2 that was inspired by the character of Gendry from this series. I invented all new characters and locations, though many of them were inspired by characters from the series. By the time I was done, I doubt anyone would even catch the similarities, but it was still a great source of inspiration.

My point is that you can make a good fanfic module within Martin's world without actually violating anyone's copyright. On the other hand if you try to remake Westeros in its entirety with all the same characters and events, you'll never finish it, and even if you do, someone's lawyer will stop you.

An even worse case scenario would be to spend months or perhaps years on such a project only to have someone's lawyer realize what you are doing after the project was completed. All that time wasted would be a shame!

Several attempted fan remakes of Ultima games met with this fate. It's pretty harsh to have a late stage project cancellation once someone gets wind of it.

If this seriously gets underway, and you need any in-game illustrations, I may be able to help. I worked on the Game of Thrones CCG as a freelance illustrator.

That's actually not quite true. The Ultima remakes you mention all stopped development because they were unable to obtain permission to create the remakes - as in, EA didn't talk to them at all or reply to any of their emails. EA has never once sent out a cease & desist order to any Ultima remake group, the ones who quit just didn't want to risk the possibility.

I could get behind a mod inspired by ASOIAF, but I wouldn't want to recreate the books, mostly because we know what's going to happen. I'd rather pick a stage in the books--say, the time after Tyrion has left the Vale, and before the Red Wedding--and then spin off into an alternate reality.

If you've ever played LOTRO, I'd do something similar. We'd rarely ever get to party with Robb, or Jaime, or Robert, but they would exist in the world and have some interaction with us, but we would play characters not mentioned in the books, at least not directly. We could be a part of the Renly's entourage, and witness the shadow. We could be one of the people who go with Cat when she snags Tyrion at the tavern. Etc. That, IMO, is the best way to do a mod like this. What fun would there be in playing Jaime and spending a few months locked in a prison? What fun would there be in playing a story we already know the outcome of? Witnessing the story we know, but being told a different side of it... that's the way to go.

I love ASoIaF. A mod influenced by the series would be pretty cool.

I'd be hesitant to create whole new stories in the same universe. GRRM is dislikes fan-fiction quite a lot. I also think he has something were he doesn't give anyone the right to use his intellectual property.
