When you first get Sten and are back at camp for the first time, there is a point where you can loop through one of his dialog tress racking up affection bonuses. Going through the conversation below will get you a +19:

1. I have a question.
2. Why did you come to Ferelden?
1. What's an arishok?
1. Why does he care about the Blight?
3. I'm a Grey Warden. It's my job.
1. Don't you have to report back, then?
1. So what are you still doing here, then?
3. Well, you can stay with us.

However, if after you say, "3. I'm a Grey Warden. It's my job.", then say, "2. Did you find the answer to his question?". The option, "3. Why would the qunari care about the Blight?" pops up, which allows you to answer with the I'm a Grey Warden line. Then after that line you can ask him if he found the answer to his question again, then why they care about the Blight and so on and so forth.

Everytime you say, "3. I'm a Grey Warden. It's my job.", you get another +4 to Sten's affection. So just follow the conversation line I gave you above, then after the first I'm a Grey Warden line repeat the loop 20 times and you'll end up with Sten Approves +99.
