Is Jaheira going to stop calling me an omnipresent authority figure? Because if not, I'm going to have to kill her. Also, how do I initiate conversations with these people?

So far it's quite enjoyable and I can clearly see the point A to B that lead to DA:O. DA2, not so much.

No, Jaheira will not stop calling you that.
In pure BG1, there are very little conversations with your party at all (and none player-initiated).
If you want to change that, BG1 NPC Project is a mod that's aimed at exactly this purpose, but unfortunately you cannot actually install it on pure BG1, so you'd have to update your engine with either BGT or Tutu (and a copy of BG2).

Isn't there an option that will make party member speak upon selection much less frequent?

(You can also kick Khalid & Jaheira out of the party and replace them with Branwen & Khalid, who are much better and far less annoying)

Do you mean Branwen and Kivan?

I'm fairly sure that Khalid can't be in a party without Jaheira. Unless you send Jaheira to have afternoon tea with a basilisk, that is.

Personally I'd recommend playing through BG1 unmodded the first time for the original experience. It's slower than BG2, but the slowness can grow on you. I liked sending the party through meadows of wild flowers.

No conversation? Really? Conversation is one of the most important aspects of having a party for me. That's disappointing. It also has a tongue in cheek tone that I wasn't expecting.

Certain party member combinations will have some minor dialogue, but none between the companions and the PC. You will have to progress to BG2 to experience that.

And yeah, if you tend to explore, you'll run across those types of NPCs. A bit jarring if you really get into the role of the character.

In BG2 your companions will initiate conversations, something with the PC, something with other party members. You can't initiate them yourself unless by using the console.

NWN was the first BioWare game where the player could initiate conversation.

In any case, it's interesting to play because I can really see what they meant when they called DA:O a spiritual sucessor. To me, DA:O took the best aspects of the game, updated them to fit modern expectations, and then added a whole lot more choice and rolplaying opportunity.

DAO is a spiritual successor to BG2 (which is much, much better than BG1). BG2 is DAO on steroids (but in the Infinity engine).

But the whole BG saga works much much better if you take a single character from the start of BG1 to the end of ToB.

Okay, I'll keep going then, but I'm definitely ditching Jaheira at the first opportunity. ;)

Yeah I'm not a fan of Jaheira either (dunno why the writers forced her to be in your canon party for BG1).

Like virumor, I prefer Branwen and Kivan to Khalid/Jaheira. But BG1 offers a whole host of NPCs to choose from to build your party.

YMMV. I love both BG1 & 2, and I couldn't choose between them. BG2 makes a lot of improvements, but the atmosphere of BG1 is magical - especially when your Level 1 Fighter gets eaten by a wolf the first night out of Candlekeep. And Durlag's Tower may be the best dungeon ever. Damn, now I want to replay the whole saga from the beginning. If only I had a semi-decent computer at hand, instead of a netbook! <_<

Well, its definitely true that playing through the whole series through with a character is the best experience, and there are certainly many things to appreciate about BG1 (including starting as a single-HP bumbling oaf instead of a badass trained characters most RPGs insist on starting you off as these days), but on the whole the gaming experience that BG2 offers is superior to BG1 (in my opinion of course).

Of course, the no-veteran thing becomes a little funny when you hire some no-veteran veterans, like Jaheira or Xan (though the state of the latter may perhaps be explained with desease and long incarceration) and when the much feared opposition doesn't have much more battle experience either.

BG's beginnings are among the better ones I've experienced in RPGs. You're thrown into the wilderness and can go as you please, gaining some experience here and there, instead of immediately having to grind through waves of red-shirts.

NWN is the worst I've seen, with an entire adventuring academy attacked and wiped out by goblins with 3 HP.

Funny, because I don't see it at all.
DA:O has more in common with KOTOR than BG.

How about just sending the one you don't want into a pack of gnolls or something ?

it still needn't be actually offensive* - unless you're certain she's referring to your sexuality (which would be completely off-topic).

SCS1 has a component that allows you to separate them peacefully.

Send one away inside a house, leave the house before the one sent away can speak with you.

Sword Coast Stratagems is a real heartbraker, not only because of the harder battles, but because of the 'Allow NPC pairs to separate'-tweak. There might be other mods too, which allow it.

Often the unwanted partners get involved in a 'hunting accident', by being sent without proper equipment to powerful enemies alone.

An engine feature you can exploit, is leaving the unwanted partner inside a room, building or carnival tent you're sure about you wont visit again, leave the character there, then select the rest of the party and remove him or her from the party.

Hop on the bus, Gus. There are... fifty ways to leave your lover.

*oops: if I scrolled down some more I would have seen all these 3 methods are mentioned in the above 3 posts...

In case of Khalid, the best way is sending the stuttering fool into a pack of basilisks...

I usually send Jaheira into the Lotus Petal tent, as Khalid has the best DEX/CON score (sum of both) of all the pure fighters in the game (I know only 2 fighters in BG 1 but statement still true). To each his own I guess.

I have made use of the SCS-Tweak to release Minsc from his djemma. Sometimes he's still standing around wide-eyed as a level 1 Ranger when I'm already far advanced in the game.
