Surprisingly enough, it states that only 18% of all players chose a female Shepard while 82% played as a male Shepard.

Where?

Soldier works for all difficulties, and it's fun to have all the weapons for different fights and tactics. However, using biotic classes is the most fun thing to play through

The graphic in the IGN article says that 80% of players played a male Shepard, not 82%

The fact that people played as soldiers kind of annoys me: We always complain about how every shooter has a space marine in it, then when gamers are given the chance to play as one out of multiple unique and fun classes, they choose the generic soldier. I don't really get it.

But there is no denying the soldier's usefulness. I guess it's just weird that so many people used it.

I used Soldier in my very first Mass Effect 1 playthrough. I don't know why, but as far as I can see it is the most easy class to play for a beginner. It has good attack and defense.

Not surprised maleshep won by far. This forum may have a lot of vocal femshep players, but they never represented the whole public who bought and played Mass Effect 2.

Same. In DA:O I also played as a warrior in my first game for more or less the same reasons.

It's the 'safe' choice set for starting up a new game while you learn the ropes. If you like the game enough and it has enough replay-ability, you can always come back and try as other classes afterwards (as I did in ME1 and ME2).

People need to READ the links I post.

http://www.destructo...ng-188362.phtml

From said link

"We got a little factsheet card in the mail today titled "Fun Facts About Mass Effect 2". Surprisingly enough, it states that only 18% of all players chose a female Shepard while 82% played as a male Shepard."

AND from said link

•82% play as male Shepard, 18% as female Shepard

This is NOT the IGN card that was posted, this is a factsheet card that was given to Destructoid in NOVEMBER.

It'd be interesting to see romance statistics too. Reckon Miranda or Tali get the most player love?

I'd wager Miranda.

There's a LOT of love for Tali from the hardcore base but that hardly represents the majority. On the internet figures and such get screwed because we're the ones who feel the most strongly about Mass Effect. Its why there seems to be so many FemSheps, why it seems so many people love Tali and why despite the many squabbles that rage across this forum ME2 either won or came in second in nearly every public GOTY poll this year. This forum is not representative of the gaming mainstream.

The problem with the stats posted is what they don't include. Minor things like for example the total number of individual players(1000? 10,000? 500,000?) and in what time frame the stats were gathered (2 weeks? 6 months?)

Almost certainly more than 500,000 and more than 6 months. The data collecting process is opt-out, right, so unless your gaming rig isn't connected to the internet or you opted out, you're in there. And if it's a November interview, why do you think that they might be pulling old data?

Not to mention not every Mass Effect player plays the game online. I always play my game on an off-line profile.

if you do a quick shepard u standardly have soldier as class, if any other class was the standard that class would dominate;)

The figure was given in Nov so I expect the data to be from sometime around that point if a bit earlier. Regardless its certainly more than the measly what 4 - 5,000 posters we have here considering how many people do in fact have Live for their Xbox's and internet for their PC's.

Then stats are wrong.

I mean check out Youtube and you'll se that majority of videos that don't use Sheploo face for Shepard are FemShep.

Dude that's not a logical argument at all, most people don't make YouTube videos.

http://tvtropes.org/...WritersAreGirls

That extends to video and such which is a new form of fanfic so to speak (the prevelance of the amount of vidoes devoted to shipping characters for example). I don't see how you can reasonably say that Bioware's numbers are WRONG simply because it doesn't concur with your own notions.

The same happens in any game with a customizable character, ESPECIALLY rpgs. I remember the majority of fanart/fanfictions for KoTOR and such were rocking FemRevan, ditto for Warden. Its just the way the internet works.

Still that only 18% people played FemShep?

That's very hard to believe considering her popularity and praise from many websites.

Dude, internet.

I would wager the female gaming base is much more active on the internet as a whole than the male one. I mean again how many people exactly are making these videos? The actual number can't be very high.

The largest poll WE have is under 5000 votes and consider that over 2 million copies of ME2 have been sold.

Either Femshep fans are the minority by a large number but are exceptionally dedicated or these numbers are somehow off.

I  tend to think femshep players are NOT a minority AND  they are exceptionally dedicated to a well voiced character.

This only 18% is wrong assumption.

That 82% says how many player played male Shepard. It doesn't mean some of these same players did not also play female Shepard. Meaning it's wrong assumption to assume that it's just one or other, because it can also be both. Only two assumtion what can be made from it, is that more players played male Shepards, because it was listed as "high" number, not female. Also it means that 18% of players did not play male Shepard at all.

How ever, all between 18% to 81% of players could have played female Shepard.

Yes, because evidence and statistics (from one and only one source from the internet, an internet which is NEVER  wrong mind you)  are never misinterpretted or incorrectly analyzed.

In short, there's more to this.

Because it doesn't agree with what you want it to be.

82% and 13% is not some minute difference with a margin of error that can easily be corrected either way. We are talking about a HUGE numerical difference here. You're simply saying it can't be right, without any actual reason other than personal preference. I'm sorry the numbers there don't support that notion.

Most people are only going to pick the default Shepard, play through the game once (maybe not even that), thing it was cool and never play it again.

The internet is a surprising minority.
