 Just as a general feeling, and after being on ME's forums, do you feel that ME3 will have deeper RPG elements (closer to ME1's equipment system, more extensive skill leveling, stat based accuracy, etc.), remain the same as ME2, or become more shooter intensive than ME1? Personally I'd like to see a return to the deeper RPG elements, I like having a bunch of passive and active skills to allocate points to rather than the 5-6 we saw in ME2. I'd also like to see different gun and armor skins, more so than ME2, maybe not on the same level as ME1 (the inventory did get a little cluttered) and the weapon/ammo modifications. I've seen some great threads with photoshopped skill and upgrade screens that have had a great many ideas, but a lot of people appreciated the lesser RPG elements, with more emphasis on skill based shooting. For me, it's hard to gauge which side seems to have more followings, but a compromise could be in the works.

tl;dr: Do you want more RPG elements like ME1 or more shooter elements like ME2/ which do you think we will get in ME3?

I reckon ME 3 will have more shooter elements. Though, I'd be pretty downbeat about it, since I (and pretty much everyone else on here) want more RPG elements than we got in ME 2.

My idea of role playing has more to do with how immersive the gaming experience is, rather than whether outcomes/resolutions are stats verses twitch skill based. That said, judging by the direction of ME2, I believe ME3 will be less of an RPG, but it will still be great.

Mm... difficult to answer.

Well, I prefer both :)

I mean, improved combat mechanic (better character mobility, better enemies/squad members AI, improved used of special abilities) and slightly more complex RPG mechanics.

But just a bit... too much RPG and it would be an step back (to the clunky ME1 inventory) than a step forward.

BOTH. You can still have richer RPG elements with lots of (improved!) pew-pew.

As long as you can still be wasted by stepping out of cover I'm good.

Personally I'd be content with

-an expanded skill tree/ leveling screen (whatever you want to call it) at around 12-15 different skills

-Ammo and gun upgrade system where we can put mod's in the guns to change ammo capacity, aim, shield/armor/health effectiveness

-Leveling up to 60 (I hit 30 in 1.1 playthroughs as opposed to 4-5 to hit 60 on ME1)

-More ability to alter your allies weapons, skills, and armor

-More guns that you have to choose between rather than "well this gun is clearly better than the others so time to stop using the old pistol"

On a side note, better dance moves, I think everyone can agree that an Alliance Commander, a spectre, and the symbol of humanity should be able to bust some sweet moves.

I am opposed to this.

Shepard is not Shepard without the godawful dance moves.

I remember Bioware saying something about there being more RPG elements in ME3. Seems that many ME1 fans didn't appreciate the shooter overhaul in ME2.

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous hate threads from RPG fans;
Or to take Arms against a sea of shooter fans,
And by opposing end them: To die, to sleep
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural trolls
That game is heir to? 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep
To sleep, perchance to game...

My predition:

* Same locker system, more options.

* More armor personalization

* More squadmate personalization

People like inventory because it gives them personalization. But if they can offer more personalization within the current sytem, everyone is happy.

* deeper skill trees (because I don't think they are resetting the level but we will go to 60)

* they will keep ammo powers (boooo!)

* there will be more wide open level design, more exploration, and even deeper stories (Overlord, LotSB)

* there will still be mining and some planet scanning but there will be tweaks to it. I think that gathering minerals will be made a bit more interactive. My rationale for that is the mining we did with the hammerhead.

* the hammerhead will be tweaked.

All-in-all, my prediction is that ME3 will make the critics a lot happier while giving even more to those who loved ME2.

I get the feeling that it'll have slightly more RPG elements since Christina Norman said that they wanted to do that after the feedback from ME2, but that it still won't have them back at a satisfactory level, and that we'll still have too much babying of the player and stuff on autopilot for my tastes.

Well Soldier class would be empty without them.

Also Bioware promised more RPG elements.

Yup, they would have to then redesign the soldier and rebalance the other classes, which means a level reset for sure, so I am against it.  I just would have like ammo. :-)

And T_K, you could just say you want more micro-management. You don't always have to state your preference in insulting terms.

Don't make me post the Sparta picture.

People don't like inventory just because they can look fab thanks to it. It also gives you the feeling of progression - you get better, you get further into the ****storm - you get better junk. End of story. Same with combat mechanics - they don't add any kind of progression as they are in ME2, I do like that combat is more "mouse and keyboard handling skill" oriented, but I miss Shepard getting better at anything because he level up. That's I would love to see a little bit more expanded inventory system and a little bit more sense of level progression in the game overall.

Better than devolving completely back into ME1 territory.  Honestly, I'd really like to see them take best of both worlds, here.

You know what I'd like them to get rid of?  The stupid tip screens.  "Press F to make Shepard pick his nose."  Seriously, where's the little "disable tips" checkbox?

Both are on their very grade school looking check list. Christina Norman posted it somewhere awhile ago.

But simply saying that is not entirely accurate, because it's not just that in ME2 they took away control and choice from the player, and it's not just that they made so much automated, linear and shallow to the point of it being almost completely pointless, but it's the way they did it and the way it was presented as well. Mass Effect 2 didn't only feel like "Baby's First RPG" in function most of the time, but also in form.

Insert few possibly insulting comments about diffrences between PC gamers and console users.

Especially with Gears 3 on the way late in the year.
