No argument there.  But much of what I've seen from DA2 so far is of lesser quality than DAO was.  The dialogue system, for example.

That doesn't really seem to be an accurate statement. You can prefer DA:O's dialogue system of course, but simply having a different system doesn't automatically make it of lesser quality. It can be an extremely high quality of paraphrased, voice over work and you can still dislike it.

Now, if it were the worst narrative BioWare has ever told, and we find that the cause of that is the dialogue system then you'd of course be right.

For RPG, no not really. Especially since the 30 to 40 hours usually includes all side quests.

Im already dissapointed, its way to short.

Cut the development cycles, increase the numbers of DLC's, make more money.

Well thats subjective as I prefer that system over DAO's. In fact I prefer everything in DA2 over DAO.

Where'd you get a copy???

No one from Bioware has said precisely how long it will be (they rarely do), 30-40 hours is just part of a hypothetical scenario from the topic starter.

THe only scenario in which a time variable is useful is time for all cutscenes or dialogue. PLaytime varies between players, and varies over different playthroughs from the same player.

My first DAO playthrough was 42 hours; my next was 64. Yet those stats are meaningless as no one knows anything about that number. Was I afk? Did I use a guide to speed through anything? Did I do all quests? Did I skip dialogue?

30-40 hours is fine so long as thats actual length several 20+hr games ive owned were being returned the next day because it only took me 8. But so long as it has replay value I can deal. I can beat Kotor in 19:58 but have nearly 50 playthroughs so replay is worth more than time

I care more for Replayability (ignore the spell checker people it is a word...if we keep using it enough:)

than actual time. By Replayabilty i mean branching plot lines that occur AT the start of a plot subsection - DAO dwarven section is a better example of this than minor ending plot choices- werewolves / cult leader Korgin offer etc.

That said I would feel that anything under 45 hours on a 1st play through would feel too quick.

Completely agree although much under 50 would be a let down

The time is relative thing doesn't hold water if the amount of time it takes ME to finish DA2 is less than the amount of time it takes ME to finish DA:O.

An argument that does make sense is that if the DAO was 80 hours of decent fun, but DA2 is 40 hours of amazing fun, you might still get the bang for your buck.

I can get through a playthrough of Origins now in 24 or less hours if i want, but i prefer taking my time.

40-60 hrs of playtime is enough with multiple playthroughs coming.

I put 1500+ hrs into a game called MAG, hope i can do the same for DA2

Producer said in a video that DA2 will be shorter then DAO, but longer then ME2, so I think 30-40 hours is the playtime with all sidequests.

So wait u do know that 30 or 40 hrs is a rough estimate, I spent over that in mass effect 2 in one playthrough

jeez, usually thirty hours is just main plot, like a speed run through a game.

I wouldnt worry if i were u guys.

I don't get how 40 hours can seem short. If the game is amazing then 40 hours will be plenty. Plus lets face it, were all going to replay the game at least once.

Well, it starts with walking everywhere unless there is reason to hurry, for which I see little reason for doing so.

Exploration and discovery (while walking) slows things down, as does scouting ahead with a skilled Rogue (not to mention unlocking every locked item just to see what's inside).

The there is conversations with companions and other NPCs you may run into.

Taking time to plan and strategize a combat situation, then toss the plan out the window when things fall apart and you have to re-group.

While one can run everywhere, doesn't bother with locked items, uses 'esc' to blast through conversations, ignore what are obviously meaningless NPC conversation, sure it can shorten the play time., I'm just not in a rush. I always get my money's worth out of a game ;)

30-40 is sufficient for me. I've not had the patience or stomach for grinding and building for 'endgame' since FF10. I got Yuna to doing 99,999 with just physical attacks and decided I'd pretty much broken the game (not EU, so I didn't get to pit myself against Penance. A shame.) and that was it. I've not bothered with a full on nigh-100% make-everyone-godly run of any game since.

Without that heavy grinding, overt -not to be confused with no -exploring, or whatever, the most that about any RPG has taken me in years is around 30-40, average. Which is good. I do love to replay games, especially Bioware's, but if they took 50+ even on a 'lean' run-through, that would be a bit daunting.

My only concern with 30 to 40 is that the game is over 10 years? What is that? 3 hours per year? I suppose it depends on how they handle time progression.

Other than that, 30-40 is fine with me. Hopefully closer to 40. With work I usually only have time for 1 or 2 playthroughs of any one game anyway before something else comes out I want to play.

After reading about 300 hour playthrough of BG2, I don't think I will ever play it even though I just bought it.

*deleted wall of text* Alright, try to do this with out babbling. ME2 I think struck the best balance, it was a bit longer then ME1 and, mining aside, most of it was fun and had only a few parts where it was a dread to replay. And that was usually due to the flying Lazer-Zombie thing that you basically had to fight cheaply to win. Lots of circle running and cover.

With DA2 - I'm going with 'yes' at 40 hours. 40 hours is a good length, its about the perfect length if a game has a good sense of replayability. Which is what I think ME2 did best even though its intro is way to long. I hope DA2 'intro' to where you actually get into the meet of things is shorter then DAO/ME(1 and 2). It makes it a bit of a pain to actually test out characters and get one I want to play if I can't actually get into the part where **** starts mattering 2-3 hours 'later'. I mean DAO, After lothering is where stuff starts matter right? I have to SPEED run that, and it still takes me 1-2 hours to do.
