I'm just a little bit confused in Baldur's Gate what determines what level of spell you can use. I assumed it was character level but it can't be as my mage is level 3 and can only memorise level 2 spells. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Like the manual?

It contains a lot of useful tables at the end, some of which should answer your question. (spell progression is different for clerics, druids, mages, bards, rangers and paladins)

I looked through the spellcasting section of the manual. Guess I should have looked at the tables too. Thanks for your help.

Basically you'll need to halve your mage's level when realizing what spell they're able to cast. A level 7 mage can cast level three spells, and maybe some of the spells from level 4.

In version 2:

Mages advance a spell tier every 2 level ups.

1,3,5,7,9...

however when 6th tier spells aren't unlocked at character level 11... they are delayed to 12 (idk why)

Same applies for priests... but instead of 13th level... 7th tier incantations are unlocked at level 14.

But you will only have to worry about that after Bg1... since a mage can only really reach 5th tier spells (after TOTSC)
