How do you know they knew, are you Bill or Ted with a time machine to go back to talk to peasants from the Middle Ages? Maybe the important people who wrote history knew, that doesn't mean most people did.
Also, as far as social issues go, Thedas isn't exactly like the Middle Ages, women are treated more like modern women, and racism seems to focus mostly on the distinct fantasy races, not on differences among the human race.
And your thing about Anora and the queen or Orlais only seems to validate my point that people are likely to assume Hawke is a white guy/girl.
I don't know without a doubt, but Alexander didn't rally the greek army to fight said persians without people knowing who they were or what they looked like.. As I said, race has always been a hot button issue, even sub classes within the same culture.. Take the caste system in India, the darker the skin, the more people assume they're of a lower caste, period..
And everyone most likely distinguish say the Rivain from others based on their non-belief in the maker.. That would translate into skin color distinction because it becomes an easily identifiable characteristic.
And my thing about the Queen and Anora I would say proves my point more as if the Queen was black people would really take notice.. The whole world now, in the modern technologically advanced age we live in, made a huuuuge deal out of Obama becoming president.. why? because he's partially Black..

If you're saying people don't care about
skin colour, then why would they assume hawke is white? Might as well
assume he's black.
