I wanted to clarify a few things before i continue writing my modules story.
Firstly my module takes place in the same world as Neverwinter.

These gods may play a part in my module-

1. Kelemvor (im presuming is the current god of death) i.e- not undeath but those that have died?
1a. If so then who is the Raven Queen by comparison?

2. I was going to use Velsharoon as the God of Undeath, but I believe he has already died?
2a. If Velsharoon has died, then who is the current god of Undeath?

3. Does Orcus take place in the same realms?
3a. If so what does a Patron lord of the undead do exactly?

Thanks in advance. :wizard:

FRWiki is great but it's 4th edition, so for example Velsharoon is still around when the NWN2 campaigns take place but is dead according to the wiki so make sure you pay attention to the dates and stuff.

OK.. this could take a bit, so I will split my answer.. first.. about Orcus:

Orcus:
Demon Prince of the Undead, Tenebrous

Orcus is a massive, bloated demon prince-bloated on spite, bile, and contempt. Once complacent, his wars against Demogorgon and Graz'zt waning, he was murdered and deposed. But then Orcus rose from the dead as an undead demon and took the name of Tenebrous, hiding in the shadows, waiting to take his revenge. Now he has reinstated himself in his former position and taken up residence in Naratyr, his terrible fortress-city in the Abyss on Thanatos (the layer he rules). Once again, he finds himself in a struggle for dominance with many of the other demon lords. He is no longer content to grow old and fat feeding on larvae in his castle. Orcus lives in the Abyss. His symbol is a skull-headed rod.
Orcus appeals most to demons, necromancers, and the undead. While not an actual god quite yet, Orcus is worshiped as a god more often than any of the other demon princes. Although Demogorgon might actually be more powerful, Orcus is closer to ascending to true godhood. The cult of Orcus is widespread among other groups as well, with a more significant following among humanoids than most demon princes. In particular, orcs, half-orcs, ogres, and giants revere Orcus, as well as corrupt and despicable humans.
Orcus is, in many ways, a contradictory figure. He does not delight in his charges, the undead, and has not taken up the self-proclaimed mantle of "Prince of the Undead" out of devotion or allegiance. If anything the demon lord despises the undead-he has little but contempt for them and uses them without thought or consideration. Of course, Orcus despises the living as well. He hates everything and everyone, often being almost overwhelmed with revulsion and loathing. He craves only personal power and the spread of misery and destruction for all others.

Portfolio:
Undeath, revenge.

Domains:
Chaos, Evil, Death, Darkness

Cleric Training:
Orcus isn't one for the orderly training or organization, so neither are his priests. Thus, training consists of little more than a grisly oath, the introduction to the mythology of Orcus, and a hearty strike with a skullheaded rod to complete the process.

Quests:
Orcus has set his worshipers the task of increasing the level of his own worship across all lands, killing those who resist-including the followers of other evil deities, especially Nerull. Typical quests include attacking a rival Nerull-cultist compound, raiding a church of Pelor or to destroy its sacred items, and building or opening portals or gates from the Abyss to the Material Plane.

Prayers:
The most common refrain in a prayer to Orcus is a confirmatory phrase at the end of a declaration, something like "...or let Orcus strike me dead and steal my eternal soul."

Temples:
Despite his status as a demon prince rather than a true god, Orcus has inspired the creation of temples all over the planes. Those that worship him gain clerical power as if worshiping a true deity, though they clearly gain that power from some more universal source (perhaps from the Negative Energy Plane itself). His temples are usually hidden, while his worshipers function as secret societies living in otherwise normal communities. Other temples, however, are terrible strongholds full of undead, where wicked lords commit atrocities and wage wars in the demon prince's name. Sometimes an entire orc tribe devotes itself to the Prince of Undead, but these individuals are shunned even by other orcs.

Rites:
Bloody conflict is the method that Orcus's followers use to rise in ranks. Sometimes this activity is formalized, as when underlings challenge upper-echelon clerics according to the Rite of Challenge. Of course, this usually results in the underlings' death before the Rite of Challenge can properly occur. In fact, the Rite of Challenge may just be a way for high-level clerics to identify troublemakers and weed them from the flock.

Herald and Allies:
A balor is Orcus's favorite choice for herald. Planar allies include howlers, glabrezu demons, and nalfeshnee demons.

Favored Weapon:
Mace.

As you might have noticed from the names of the deities, that he often fights with (Nerull, Pelor) Orcus is more related to the Greyhawk setting than the Forgotten Realms setting, BUT.. as he is actually a Demon Prince (like Demogorgon) and lives in the Abyss, it's no problem to include him in a FR campaign, too.. maybe his worshipers found or built a portal to Toril? If you need more infos about him (like his 3.5 statistics/summery) i'll post them, too..

About Velsharoon: He supposedly died (you always have to be careful with the term "died" if it's about gods, as many of them seem to rise again sooner or later ;P !!) in 1425 DR. And well (as a side note).. there is actually a 4th edition adventure, where you have to prevent Orcus from becoming the new (Greyhawk) God of Undeath!! ;-) !!

About the Raven Queen: She is the "new" Greyhawk equivalent of Kelemvor (she killed Nerull and took his place). So now you see that this all is a bit more complex as Kelemvor and Velsharoon are strictly FR while Orcus could be used in both settings (even though he belongs more to Greyhawk than FR) and the Raven Queen is strictly from the Greyhawk setting.

There was a Temple of Orcus in Pool of Radiance, which was an AD&D 1st edition cRPG, but it was there, so even though Orcus is primarily a Greyhawk construct, he has made (or at least some of his followers) an appearance at least once to my knowledge of FR gaming lore.

All of the deities exist in the outer planes, they are restricted by AO from disturbing Faerun i think - if you read he invited the egyptian and assyrian pantheons to help free the slaves of mulhorandi.

Since he's a demon, he is faerun canon as such, and the demons all try to get demi, lesser and greater god hood. The question is, can he send an avatar into faerun without AO intervening.

Even if he's greyhawk, the lore of greyhawk ( as written by the greater deity gygax ) is very much alive in faerun as much of the magic still is named after mordenkainen, bigby, etc.

I seem to remember reading that faerun incorporated the battle system campaign areas and modules using orcus after the fact. I am pretty sure he is canon, but the material involved was prior to faerun, and either was generic ( usable in multiple settings ) or shoved into the new setting.

Arkalezth wrote...

Orcus specifically appears in Canon FR books.

http://forgottenreal....com/wiki/Orcus
"Orcus became the patron of the Red Wizard Zhengyi in the 900s DR, aiding him in his quest to become a lich. Priests of Orcus supported Zhengyi in 1347 DR, when Zhengyi created the Castle Perilous, giving the lich control over many undead creatures.[1] Zhengyi attacked Damara in 1348 DR, finally bringing it under his control in 1357 DR.[2] Zhengyi lost his power when Gareth Dragonsbane and his company banished Orcus's power from the realm by stealing his wand. Zhengyi's undead army disintegrated along with Castle Perilous and Zhengyi the Witch-King was defeated.[3]"

@Cyphre69 - thanks for clearing up the raven queen.

And thanks to everyone. The above information will be extremely helpful in me creating a more 'realistic' setting for my module/campaign.

Also, in relation to the Demon Princes in Aber-Toril -- In the Baldur's Gate Saga (which, AFAIK, is canon), Demogorgon makes his appearance known. If the "Crown Prince of Demons" gets his face time, it can also be assumed that others do as well. Logic also dictates that if the Blood War is ever mentioned in any FR product, then you can include all of the Demon Princes and ArchDevils into the equation.

@Arkalezth i haven't posted any info yet. should I to promote it? if so where?

Ignore that, I think I know the answer to it.
At this stage the story is in early developments, although I have about 20 areas so far done. The story involves the Ashen Covenant (who are probably greyhawk, but oh well) in FR.
The setting begins:
At a port town on the South-western edges of the Western Hightlands, situated at the mouth of the winding winter river - north of Baldurs Gate and south of Waterdeep.
