A rule of thumb that I've always followed for any advertised game length is to divide the amount in half. That always seemed to give me a better estimation of game time.

This is obviously very personal, but It's usually spot on in my case.

Obvious case and point, Dao was advertised in the 80-100 hour range. I do a complete full run on nightmare in 40. With my first ever run clocking in at 48. So I'm expecting Dao2 to be about 20-25.

It usually takes me significantly longer to finish a game than the advertised time. I usually try the game on the hardest difficulty, try to explore anything, replay a lot of the events happening, etc.

Well that was a very nice review. I really hope he isn't exaggerating about the 50+ hours to complete the game. DA:O took me about 70 hours to complete and ME2 took about 45. If the game is shorter than 40 hours I will be disappointed, but will still buy the game because I love Bioware's games.

I like to explore the world too, but I don't mind having most of the story focused in Kirkwall. Wasn't it mentioned before that most of the story focuses on Hawke making his rising in Kirkwall?

What  a great review.

As an aside these short playthrough's on DAO astound me. My first playthrough on Hard was about 100 hours and that was no codex and minimal side quests.

Even my speed runs solo on nightmare took me about 60+ hours to complete.

Different strokes I suppose.

I'm really looking forward to the gameplay event this afternoon.

my first play through on DAO was 72 hours but im a perfectionist and just had to complete every single quest and have every conversation with my party :D, with the DLC replaying the original takes me on average now 30 hours but thats because i skip alot of conversations.

My main save that im carrying through to DA2 where i played through all the addons/expansion has racked up now 118 hours Now that was seriously worth every penny :)

PS i never read codex's either might fire up the good old DAO an read them all an see how much time that adds on :D

EDIT: Forgot my point lol... im hoping to beat that 50 hour marker this review set down an i will be reading the codex's this time :)

They like it!

Yes, they really, really like it!

Oh, I'm so pleased! PC Gamer UK gave DAO a 94, too.

Maybe all of the companions the reviewer thought to try to romance were romancable, they just didn't try Aveline. No idea. It does seem like an obvious discrepancy.

Yeah, that was my assumption. I am willing to believe that the developer's don't lie to us. In any case, there's the chat today, so we can ask then.

Who reviewed the game for PC gamer?

Rich McCormick.

And for me, thats enough to put a big asterisk next to this review considering how blatantly he's practically copy/pasted BioWare marketing lines in all of his prior previews for DA2. Seeing as this isn't the same guy that reviewed Origins for PC Gamer (which got a 94 too), I can't really take much from this.

Its great that the guy liked it, but its like any review- unless you share the same tastes as this guy, how do you really know its going to be a good game from your POV? Most of the previews of DA2 that this guy wrote are the ones that made me cringe and his first preview is the one that practically started the whole 'Dragon Effect' shenanigans.

So yeah, I'm more curious in other reviews from people that liked Origins for the reasons I liked it. I have no clue what this guy liked/disliked about Origins, besides bashing it in just about every preview for DA2.

I don't know if they would answer that question, my best guess would be that we can have "one night stands" with some companions, as opposed to actual "romantic relationships" with them throughout the game.

It occurs to me it might be possible to flirt with Aveline, and the reviewer mistook their meaning.

Yes, I'm thinking kind of like the Kelly situation from ME2, but better.  Hopefully better.  I mean, it's got to be better.  Right?

No, I'm saying that the flirt icon pops up with Aveline, and he just didn't realize it meant your Hawke was trying to flirt with Aveline. It's possible that Hawke was failing miserably at it, but the reviewer thought any line with a flirt icon meant it was a romance line.

I think that this is such a small portion of the game and I cannot fathom why this is the main talking point...

Because it's the only piece of misinformation we see in the review, and any misinformation means that the rest of the review is under suspect.

Well, the devs did say something about being able to 'flirt' with Sebastian. I take it they mean that you can flirt with anyone. That would give the impression that you can bang any one of your companions.

Otherwise, I like what I'm hearing. <3

Who says it's impossible to flirt with Aveline? You absolutely can. Whether it goes anywhere is another matter entirely.

You can turn off the overly bright lights. There are four of them, after all.

(Oh yeah, I went there. Picard-style!)
