It's like that with all reviews. They tend to get a mildly earlier version of the game for review purposes, just so they can get it out same day or tad before. The game going 'gold' is just the final print version. The game was content locked something like 6 months ago at least. It's all been bug fixing and crunch time since then. Getting reviewer site/magazines a 'nearly polished' version a month ahead of 'gone gold' is common.

Food for thought: If DA:O was the spiritual successor of BG, will Kirkwall be the spiritual successor of Athkatla?

Thanks for the background info.

Nice. I hope DA2 does as successfully in the other reviews.

They did NOT have a short development time.   they had about 2 years.    That's longer than average in the industry.

What 2 years? They started PLANNING the game right before Origins came out. Are you forgetting that they also released Awakening and lots of DLCs? The game has been in development for 1 year max, which is extremly short. Even CoD games aren't developed so quickly

if it's like Athkatla i'll be a happy camper.

I'm  picturing it much bigger than that.  In Witch Hunt there's a book on the shelf that talks about the Mage Circle tower of Kirkwall, and about how huge and labrynthine it is.  Well, that's just one building.  Imagine if there's a few more to explore.

Dragon Age 2 already had a good base to start developing from.

The setting & lore was all set, for example.

94%, that's very encouraging. I predicted 85% on average. 50 hours is also longer than I expected. "The best RPG combat ever" could simply mean that the reviewer is an action fan and never liked rpg combat. Anyway, that's a great score and I hope the trend continues.

Same here, and as to the earlier comment on Athkatla. A lot of stuff they've said here and there keeps reminding me of BG2 more so then DAO did. Something about gathering a large sum of coin for 'something' or other, not sure if thats a major plot point or a major-side plot point but that just sounded a lot like the starting point in BG2. Night/Day differences to the city locations, needing to be in places at one or the other for whatever reasons.

Frankly im looking forword to another big city adventure with some mild out-of-town side adventures. Having a 'city' being a footnote like they where in DAO just made them feel small, little hollow. So heres some high-hopes to Kirkwall being all kinds of awesome.

I am fearing that we'll have a repeat of some of ME2's "sexy" elements.

It means the review is basically promoting DA2 and marketing it

DAO was ment to come out in 2008 but was delayed for console port. The expansion was then worked on with majority of the team focusing on DA2. DA2 has been on dev for around two years.

Oh great, more annoying but shots and dry humping. Will Isabela and Hawke do it in the middle of Kirkwall?

Like I said, they reviewed DAO just as early and gave it the same score, which it fully deserved.

@Blackyblack: keep in mind DLC tend to be made by smaller teams. They don't put the full force behind that kind of stuff, generally. That and the FULL team isn't required, the whole development cycle. Art concepts have to get out for the modelers and so forth to go off of, writers have to do there thing so level designers actually have places to work off of. A lot of story boardering and so forth has to be done 'before' direct development, and the team that would do that is smaller then the whole. They could of been doing that while the DLC was being done. Not like half the team just kinda sits around twiddling there thumbs while the DLC crew does there thing.

6 months before.  But you're right.  Obviously  when Developers,  lead designers, and lead writers get  together  every week  to discuss and plan something, they're really not doing anything, and so, that time period doesn't count towards the development period.... right?

Not to get all snotty and high-nosed here, but the inclusion of DLC, expansions, and even other games  (don't forget ME2 and  ME3!!) does not alter production time, or cost, or effort  for DA2,   Not with a company the size  and connections of Bioware .  and while I can count at least 7   Bioware devs who have been pointing this out to us for the past...oh 10 YEARS,   I think the track reacord can speak for itself.

Some say that the characters (particularly the party members) of Bioware games are the strongest, not the story. However, I do hope that the story isn't paper thin or poor.

Not gamings best story, that is disheartening. I mean, that is usually "it sucks" in a gift-wrap. All the reviews I have read all mostly just focused on battle, is this what da has become?

One of the threads around here provide link where Darrah and Mike Laidlaw are doing demo. Mike Laidlaw said, "sexy", mean "cannot be ugly".

I forget the link. Sorry.

So I know we aren't allowed to scan magazine reviews but what are the rules on how much we are allowed to type up from them and post?
