Literally, yes the Enginner with it's ridiculously overpowered Drone. In the lore sense, my favorite; The Adept.

Well I wasnt a big fan of the power wheel in the first game (I bought the game 6 months before mass effect 2 came out and I was still newer to RPG's) so both my playthroughs were as soldiers, but after I watched the class videos and saw that you could map more than one power and didnt always have to open the power wheel to use abilities, I decided to go with the sentinel on my first playthrough.
I cant say what the absolute best class is, but with the sentinel, being able to to weaken just about every enemy AND take them down, to me, makes it the most versatile class. Like in the video, a 'jack of all trades'. Oh a heavy mech? Overload, Warp, Throw..... Kill...
The second playthrough was as a vanguard. very fun, but the charge definitely leaves you vulnerable, unless you have area charge to take down the other surrounding enemies. I would only suggest vanguard if you select Barrier as your bonus ability so that you can give yourself some more defensive options for when you find yourself SCREWED!
I havent really been able to bring myself to play through as any other classes. i started a soldier but i screwed up a few things i wanted to do with it so i scrapped it. I started my first femshep as an adept. I like it. Again, barrier as a bonus ability.

So from my personal experiences, Sentinel is equipped to deal with anything. Especially with the tech armor ability that will save your ass if you find yourself stuck out in the open.
Vanguards are probably not a good first playthrough class. When you use charge, youre going to want to make sure you have a plan after you use it (prioritize targets, escape plan). Also, having barrier will save you if you get into a situation where you find yourself taking longer than you expected to clear out the enemies around you.
Adept is... meh... not too practical. But it is fun using powers. So i guess its k.
Soldier is for people that like firepower... dont know how else to explain it. Ammo powers are definitely a plus.
Ive never actually played as an engineer or infiltrator, so i dont have the right to make any comments about them.

Agree with you 100%. Sentinel may not be the best at anything (Excepting tanking) but it's ready for everything. The shield ability will save your life so often its not even funny, you just have to keep an eye out for when your out of shield and poof they're back.

I prefer to play as a Soldier but I am curious about the Infiltrator class. I tried Sentinel but didn't care for it. I guess I like guns too much.

For me the sentinel class by far, not only your tech armor makes you a tank, you also have both tech and biotic powers (overload and warp are 2 of my favorite powers by far, also throw)
you can also obtain assault rifles through the game.

Compared to ME1, they really castrated Adepts in ME2. Oh joy, let me spam some more Warp!

a nice little trick is to use it before you come into a combat situation. When you lose shields, it will send out that pulse, knocking people back. And itll be obvious that your shields are down because of that. so.... win win

I think it depends on the playing style too. For me the best is the infiltrator. If you try the soldier too, maybe you can feel the lack of the assault rifle, but with the tempest smg i feel however good.
I love that weapon, the only problem is that it's not efficent like the rifle at mid-long range, but for this there is the sniper rifle.
I think someone thinks the soldier is boring because of he is the least "original" class. However is for me the easyer because it balance the lack of powers with the arsenal and shoot an enemy is easyer and more immediate than use powers, generally.
I would like to make an appointment on the cryo ammo: would be more realistic if those were effective on armors too? Frozening it at least in part, like one arm, one leg or the chest, depends were you strike the target, reducing the ability to move of an enemy?

Sorry for bad english^^

The Best ... hard to say. The thing is with regards to soldier types at least, it caters to different play styles and it does that very well. So the most "fun" class is the class the fits your play style the most ... or at it it is potentially the most fun.

In regards to Adept the shared cooldown timer, the shields and barriers made biotic less fun to me and I ended up more shooting people then bioticing people. Biotics for me was more to finish people off. For ME1 Adept was great, hands down my favourite class (even over the infiltrator) and ME2 Infiltrator has the top spot for me and adept is further down below the soldier.

I found Soldier and Sentinel to be the most enjoyable.'

The biotic classes would have been better if they didn't have the global cooldown.

Soldier: best for causing the most damage in a short period of time, adrenaline rush and assault riles make this the overall best class

Infiltrator is like Soldier lite. Tactical cloak is fun, but it has such a punishing recharge time and you suffer heavily whenever an enemy gets close. The lack of a shotgun made this class hurt, since not taking the widow would be crazy

Vanguards are sort of one trick ponies. Their ammo powers are less then useful, and the only thing that is neat is the charge. If you don't know how to use it, you die fast.

Engineers are really superfluous in this game, tali and legion both have combat drone and better weapons

Adepts suffer from anything with shields. And singularity is really useless in higher difficulties.

Sentinels just have the wrong powers! either way, tech armor is fun, but doesnt really add to gameplay

Know how I know you don't know how to use the other four classes?

Especially the Vanguard.  Incendiery ammo is far from "less than useful".  It more than compensates for the lack of armor bonus on the shotgun  And I use Pull as often as I use Charge.

Engineer has Combat Drone... with a four-second cooldown.  Tali and Legion have thirty seconds.  You can have another drone on the enemy like a bad rash as soon as they pop the previous one. Plus, there's ALL the other tech powers.

No shotgun on the Infiltrator?  That's what the SMG is for.  Doesn't have the raw killing power of a shotgun, but still no slouch at short range.

Sentinels have a power for any occasion.  Shields?  Overload.  Armor?  Warp.  Biotic barrier?  Warpsplosion.  Unprotected?  Throw, or Cryo Blast.  Under heavy fire?  Tech armor.

I do agree on the Adepts getting the worst end of the nerf stick.

You focus too much on guns.  Fine if you prefer the Soldier, but just because you don't know how to use the other classes doesn't mean they're "inferior" to the soldier, it just means you need to learn how to diversify.

I think the classes are well balanced, with some situations favoring one class over another. That said, the Sentinel seemed to be the toughest and most well-rounded if occasionally boring. The class with the biggest weakness (adept) was patched with stasis. I hope that power comes standard in ME3.

I would say Engineer. Mainly because of the Combat Drone to divert larger enemies. But also, they almost have some way to strip every kind of protection. Overload for shields, Incinerate for armor. Then just throw in Warp Ammo for barriers.

So I've been thinking, with all the fights on which class is the best, I ask simply, which really is the best class and why?
Simpy which is the most fun and/or most efficient/effective?

I hope that if you're into subjective questions you don't mind subjective answers.  Fun, effective, efficient are all dependant on how people play, their tendancies, etc.  I'm farily confident that elite players at one class may have advantages over elite players in other classes but for MANY players that have a hard time overcoming their own biases / tendancies / role playing limiations / etc. you won't have an easy answer because it varies too much with the person.

**************************

For me I have great fun with a Vanguard.  Zipping around the battlefield [mobility], getting in someone's face for the kill, risking death with every move [visceral feel] all appeals to me.  I esp. like the tactical positioning options the class gives you that very few other classes can match.

The most "efficient" [for me] is a Widow + Mattock Soldier with tons of Ammo powers.    This character is surgical in strikes, can send out FIENDISH levels of firepower when need be ... In most situations the class is a 1-man-show with only a few drawbacks.

Easiest for me is a caster Engineer because Exploding Drone-Spam locks down the battlefield soooooo much it's crazy.

I have played through with every class and I think soldier is the best. A Soldier with a mattock, widow and maxed Adrenaline Rush is basically an unstoppable force. They hit a lot harder than Infiltrators, the +damage% from AR seriously owns.

For survivability though, Sentinel and Engineer are slightly better (however their damage output is a bit lower).

I want to try the Sentinel. It's got the three weapons I use: pistols, SMGs and sniper rifles (if I get sniper training on the Collector ship). Plus it has the awesome-looking and powerful Tech Armor, Warp and Overload for tough enemies, and I can make ice statues and throw them.
Vanguard is fun (I love Charge), but it's all about close-range and on the harder difficulties, close-range isn't great. Soldier is good and accessible, but not particularly fun. Adept, I haven't tried, but it has a lot of power so you can basically tear enemies apart. Engineer looks powerful but boring, and the Infiltrator seems like great fun. Basically, it's all about how you like to play the game. I like to bring down enemy defences quickly, throw them around a bit, then finish them off with a nice clean headshot. I think Sentinel is for me.

I know this is entirely subjective, but I actually found the soldier to be one of the more fun classes. Being able to switch between different weapon types for different situations while in bullet time was seriously cool. If I got tired of the shotty I'd switch to assault rifles, If I got tired of assault rifles I'd switch to sniper rifles etc. It's fun developing different strategies and tactics based on the different gun types.

I always like soldier most, it's also the least complicated (for me anyway).

A few times I played as Vanguard and right now I'm doing a playthrough as Sentinel. But I must say, it takes me a lot longer on hard difficulty (insanity is not healthy for me).
