So many tech powers and with Combat Drone for distraction it is really easy to go CQC.

QFT!!!

Drones for distractions and taking enemies out of cover.
Incinerate for taking care of armor and health
Overload for taking out shields.
Warp ammo (if chosen) for taking out barriers especially useful with SMG.
AI hack for Geth and mech
Cryo for turning enemies into bits of ice.
Weapon/armor/tech/biotic research is cheaper
Chosing AR as bonus weapon skill during Collector ship mission gives engineer long reach (especially with Mattock).

Engineer is my favorite class in Insanity difficulty to play.  Infiltrator is a close second.  Widow sniper rifle is epic.

Sentinel. The tech armor is such a lifesaver on Insanity. It can be tough until you get advanced weapon training though.

Gameplay wise probably engineer/sentinel.. although I just can't see Shepard playing anything else other than a soldier. That's one of my justifications for not playing as any other class.

;p

Sometimes you can skip half the level almost with a Vanguard, so that has to be considered the most efficient.

seriously, if this is a debate about which class is the most powerful then the answer is engineer with stasis. there is no fight in all of ME2 that an engineer with stasis cannot breeze through on insanity. the crowd control is so powerful, you can easily lock enemies down with the combat drone and then stasis. verrrry easy and overpowered.

For me, I find I play a Soldier and a Vanguard the most. Soldier has all the nice guns; I love the assault rifles available to you as you play through the game. Vanguards are particularly interesting with their ability to Charge. When I had my first playthrough of Mass Effect 1 and 2, it was a Vanguard. In ME2, I used the Charge ability quite a bit against Harbinger's Posessed Collector form.

Is a solder a good build for a beginner gamer who play Mass effect 2 for the first time?

The Engineer was the easiest class on insanity for me, because of its ability to instantly take off aggression by deploying a combat drone. a team of engineer + legion + tali barely get shot at because there are so many combat drones flying around.

...and fighing mechs you end up with an army at your displosal ^_^

It will be interesting to see how the Engineer plays in Arrival

Engineer is my insanity play through as well.  Arc projector will be a must and thankfully my Combat Drone is maxed out.  Warp ammo is my bonus power (no waiting for a cooldown thus leaving all my other skills available) but in the footage I've seen thus far I have yet to see a barrier equiped enemy.  I'm wondering if I should change up to disruptor ammo but I got the feeling that on insanity there will have to be at least some barrier equiped enemies.

I have my warrior Femshep who can hammer through just about anything with her trust Maddock rifle and Collector Beam weapon. I also have slam as a bonus power. I've only died in the game three times while playing with her, and all of those times are because I was too cocky and left my cover.

As long as you are talking about ME2, Engineer seemed to be really strong, especially if you took Reave or some other excellent second skill. You basically had it all.

I'll be honest though, I have never played all the classes. I didn't like the Charge ability though... it always put me into so much trouble, but there are people on youtube who beat insanity with it, so I guess anything's possible.

I would have said that class is the worst, so if you can win with it on insanity, I would imagine that you can beat insanity with any class.

Vanguard is probably the class with the most valid argument for being "the best class" considering that none of the other classes can achieve objectives as fast as a Vanguard can. It is all still subjective though...

I kind of root for all classes... It is quite amazing how such a small set of skills can change gameplay between classes so radically.

I've finished the game with all classes, and redoing eacht on insanity. Even though sentinal was my favourite on lower diffsets (great class if you go for the exploding pulse armor spec, suicide terrorism has never been so much fun!!!) and I really like adapt too (Physics funtastic!), playing as such on insane, is very, very tedious. You hardly get to utilize their skills and I ended up hiding, poping of the odd shot, and let my buddies do the 'talking'. Though using them on hardcore is extremely fun (best difset in general i think, the exact right amount of challenge)

Soldier: SAY: GHELLOW TO MY LITTLE FWIEND!!!!
Infil: <3 Cloak+flamethrower.
Eng: Hey dude, nice battle-mech.... MINE!
Vanguar: FREEDOOOOOOO (PSHSHSHSHSSHGGGG BOOM!) OOOOOM!!!
Adapt: Oooooh, so your hiding... thats clever.. didn't think of that o... PULL!!! SLAM!!! SPLAT!!!!
Sentinal: "Tech armor reads: If you can read this, you are about to get paralyzed, and then hit in the face.... twice.... and then pushed of the walkway.... into seas of nothingness.... it will be very unpleasent... Sorry."

One of those things I always reckon is that you have to play all 6 classes in the game, 'cos they're all so much fun in their own ways. Top three, for me? Soldier (Bringin' the dakka), engineer (I LOVE MY DRONE) and vanguard (steam in and nut the other guy to death).

Engineer has one of the most lulzy, incredibly cheap (so naturally, I use it any time I can) moves in the game, though:

1/ Spawn a combat drone at the feet of someone with a rocket launcher.

2/ Watch as they fire at the drone, at point blank range, and blow themselves clean across the battlefield...

3/ Laugh and repeat every single time you have the chance.
