I just thought that some groups might like to allow comments, discussions etc. from All Registered Users if they so choose, rather than just members and friends. At this time, group settings don't allow it.

This is something I've been meaning to bring up to. The permissions and privacy options are somewhat ropey.

For example, the permissions options on my Profile has the following raido buttons:
  • All Registered Users
  • Only My Friends and Everyone within My Subnetwork
  • Only My Friends and Their Friends within My Subnetwork
  • Only My Friends
  • Only Me
But what happens if I want to have "my friends and their friends (regardless of subnetwork)" or "my friends and everyone from my groups"?

Similarly the permissions on a group are (again raido buttons):
  • All Registered Users
  • Only Group Members, Their Friends, and Their Friends' Friends
  • Only Group Members and Their Friends
  • Only Group Members and Group Leader's Friends
  • Only Group Members
  • Only Group Leader and Group Officers
  • Only Group Leader
  • Nobody
A better approach might be check boxes rather than radio buttons, for example:
  • me
  • my friends
  • my friend's friends
  • my groups
  • my groups's friends
  • my subnetwork
  • registered users
  • everyone else
This way you could build an exact list of who had what rights.

What's allowed for permissions is defined by each site section independently, is stored in a bitmask, and involves some very, very hairy SQL queries to check (which is why there are some outstanding bugs in it). Making them consistent and/or changing what the allowed levels are is not feasible, unfortunately.

Cool! Thanks. We really have power around here! :)

P.S. I totally agree with leaving Uploads out of this.
