It's quite obvious why they do it. By comparing themselves to Bioware and creating this debate they can pretend to be on the same level.

... or, you know, because the interviewer asked him, and he gave an honest answer.

Vs topics between DA and TW have been brewing on the net for some time now. And that interviewer was clearly fishing. At this point Bioware may as well start firing back. Come on Laidlaw, give em yer best shot!

I think Bioware and Obsidian have a bit more class when talking about competition. CD Projekt are the underdogs, and it seems like they've been trying to make as much noise and get as many headlines as possible. This is like the 5th time I've read something about them bashing Bioware or another dev and claming "WE'RE #1 in 2011!!" I don't think Bioware or Bethesda or anyone else they've been bashing need to respond, really. Just let that dude run his mouth off and let metacritic and sales figures do the talking.

Again, sales mean nothing for quality.

Seriously, look at all of the (unpatched) bugs in Origins.

You're holding bugs in DAO up against the witcher who had to re-release their whole game within a year because the first one wasn't even done properly?

I've played both and like both. DA and TW are just different kinds of fun. I'm not sure how else to explain it.

I have to agree with this. I am anxiously awaiting DA2 *and* TW2. They are both enjoyable for different reasons.

Nest shot? That sounds . . . I don't want to go there.

I talked my housemate into playing The Witcher because he was bored and I thought he might like it, but I was never interested in it and I'm still not. I watched him play, but at no point did I say "ooh, I want to play that!"

I don't think he's ever finished the game, either. Got bogged down in endless repetitive combat. Granted, Bioware does that too.

People just don't understand how competition in the market really works. The existence of other studios and frequent new releases is what gets people to make room in their budget for games, for the hardware to play those games, and is what allows a huge game-making industry to exist. Do you really want to go back to the days where all games looked and played like something that came out of somebody's basement?

And what kind of pathetic individual goes around saying "this thing that I had no role in creating whatsoever is better than this other thing, so I'm better than people who like other thing!" Right.

Really? Answering a direct question on how their game compares to Dragon Age and saying that they have better graphics and more fleshed out world is going to scare people away?

Somehow I doubt that.

Facts are one thing, attitude is another. I dislike how he worded his argument. It sounded slightly juvenile. Then again, the interviewer was just as much at fault, and i detest stuff like that. Games should be judged on their own merits, not how they compare to another game.

Again, the attitude if anything is refreshing. I'd rather have a direct "we are better because..." answer than the usual no-content marketing blurb.

And I really hope that CD Projekt thinks they are making the best game ever. If they shoot to be the second best, they have lost already.

Conversely, I hope that BioWare guys when they work on DA2, their goal is the best RPG ever. What's the point in aiming for mediocrity?

I actually think they're worth comparing - I checked out the Witcher demo because people in these forums had played it and liked it, so useful comparison is useful.
What I'm finding is that the Witcher annoys the hell out of me - wooden voice acting and character movement, long boring walks (although that's always the case in a new environment), fiddly controls, mystifying lore (I still don't fully understand what a Witcher is - is Geralt a witch, or does he kill witches or what?)... but I'm still finding it weirdly compelling. I think it's precisely because the gameplay is fiddly and the lore mystifying - I want to play long enough to find out WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON.
With DA I was able to just leap right in and found everything to behave exactly the way I expected it to (healing potions, combat, leveling up) whereas the Witcher seems to be ... what the hell is up with this meditation stuff? How the hell do I level up? WHY WON'T ANYONE TELL ME ANYTHING??? (Cos I have no money and won't bribe them. Better revise that opinion.)
The only clear advantage the Witcher has over DA is the gorgeous environments (so why do the people look like crap?) - however, the videos I've seen of the Witcher 2 make me at least interested enough to wait for a sale.

And guess what? That patch was free for anyone who had bought the game previously.

Bioware has yet to fix all of the little bugs (and larger ones for those who suffer the constant crash to desktop bugs). How is that in any way or form "better"?

I wasn't a fan of the Witcher, but I'll agree that TW2 looks pretty nice. That said, the graphical style of DA2 is also impressive to me, especially the landscapes, as I enjoy that painted, stylized look.

Some games/themes appeal to some people more than others and you're always going to have a divide at somewhere. Nothing in the history of the world has been universally accepted. Electricity, seems like a pretty good gig, right? Enter the Amish. And so on and so forth. I don't care what The Witcher 2's devs think about Dragon Age's world/graphics etc. Much like most of their fans won't care what I think about the first Witcher one way or another. Just get over it is all I can think. Enjoy one/both and leave it at that.

I crashed 7 times in The Witcher, lamps and lights appeared through walls, my cursor rarely works at the main menu and I had to completely restart because an essential NPC had disappeared.
I crashed 2 times in DA:O, and the only problem I recall was the Elven Boots not being where they were supposed to be.

I know what you think.

I like them both, I recognize the merits and faults on their own, not by comparing them to other things (which serves no other purpose on this point than creating pointless tension).

Sure TW2 looks better (won't look like that on consoles, that's for sure -*if* it will even be released for consoles), but does it matter ?

I'm looking forward to both games.

I don't think the guys from The Witcher team were being rude necessarily, their game DOES look graphically superior to Bethesda's and Bioware's current games, though that doesn't make it a better game. Zelda for example, often hailed as being one of the greatest game franchises out there, and it's graphical stand point aren't even comparable to Dragon Age or Elder Scrolls. But it's FUN, which is why it sells.

I do find it amusing that Mike Laidlaw would compliment The Witcher yet these guys seem to be "artfully" attacking Dragon age 2.

Then we just have a difference in opinion on how marketing should be handled, and thats fine. We like different things, and i wont bash you for it.

Shooting to be the best is what should be happening. I just dont like it when it involves "bashing" (although it wasnt really true bashing) other games that are their competition.

Since neither DA2 nor TW2 is out yet, there's not much else to use as reference at this point.

Sure, The Witcher 2 might look better. But honestly I don't consider that news. I know I'll be having a lot of fun playing both games, either way.

Graphics are one of the last things that matter to me in a RPG. Some of my absolute favorites are old PC games, and even older NES and SNES games. So. Yeah.

From the few posts I've seen by Gop in the CD red site, he's the type to tell it like it is. I prefer that over spin any day. I also respect Bioware of course, and the devs who regularly get online to speak with us. Besides, Gop just answered the question honestly; he wasn't 'calling out' Bioware.

Im pretty sure the sales of DA2 will speak loudly enough to the Witcher people that their "graphical superiority" means absolutely nothing. Id say DA does 3-5 times the numbers the Witcher 2 pulls off.

The "it made more money" argument has never been a show of quality.

If it were, that would mean Britney Spears makes some of the best music in the history of mankind.

Graphics are not fully indicative of quality either, so what exactly was your point?. This whole thread is about the graphical superiority of one game over another. If sales dont matter, then neither do the graphics.

Naked mud fight between Gop and Laidlaw to settle this issue once and for all, please.
