Wait..... are there even nationalities in ME (to the point where Italian vs English is even valid?)

There's actually a little excerpt from the first novel talking about how the world has become mixed and physical appearance is not really a good indicator of where and what culture you are from.

Zaeed's VA is certainly English. His first name is Arabic but his last name sound European to me. Zaeed could be a spacer or from an earth colony.

Not everybody is a single ethnicity nor the stereotypical ethnicity of their nationality...

I thought he was Australian.

*facepalm* I really wish people who stop thinking that Poms are Aussies...Miranda is Australian, Zaeed is English.

Operation: Slight Irritation of a Brit, GREAT SUCCESS

Anyway, I always figured Middle Eastern ancestry, but from an old British Colonial region. Much like how India's highly educated often speak English with a predominantly English accent. They learned the language in that dialect, like I assume Zaeed did.

Not to mention there's no better way to make an audience think someone is both very military and very crazy than giving them an accent that sounds like it was hand-crafted by Jason Statham with assistance from the SAS.

As of ME2 It has only been 30-some years since humanity first explored outside it's own solar system, so Zaeed had to have been born on Earth rather than on a colony world. Since he has a British accent, it's safe to assume that he was born in the UK and his nationality is British. Since he has an Arabic first and last name, it's safe to assume that his ethnic origin is either fully Middle-Eastern, or Middle-Eastern on his father's side of the family.

For those that are confused as to why a person with a British accent has a Middle-Eastern name, there is immigration to the UK just as there is immigration to US, Canada, Australia, or other Western nations.

As an example, here is the demographics for modern day London:

According to the Office for National Statistics, based on 2006 estimates, 69.4 per cent of the 7.5 million inhabitants of London were White, with 58 per cent White British, 2.5 per cent White Irish and 8.9 per cent classified as Other White. Some 13.1 per cent are of South Asian descent, with Indians making up 6.5 per cent of London's population, followed by Bangladeshis and Pakistanis at 2.3 per cent each. 2 per cent are categorised as "Other Asian". 10.7 per cent of London's population are Black, with around 5.5 per cent being Black African, 4.3 per cent as Black Caribbean and 0.7 per cent as "Other Black". 3.5 per cent of Londoners are of mixed race; 1.5 per cent are Chinese; and 1.9 per cent belong to another ethnic group.[5] In January 2005, a survey of London's ethnic and religious diversity claimed that there were more than 300 languages spoken and 50 non-indigenous communities with a population of more than 10,000 in London.[6]

'Cause of music in his loyalty mission and the name Zaeed I always assumed that he has some Islamic blood and with Massani surname I assumed that his father was Italian (http://www.genealogy...Surname=Massani ). It is stated several times in the novels that many people of Earth have mixed origins (i.e. first chapter Ascension, Paul Greyson's dream about Keo and his guessing from where she came cause her pale skin is quite rarity in those times, and then info on Hendel Mitra). So, somehow I always viewed Zaeed as someone who has two culture, nations background.

I know this is probably wrong, but at least in my head-canon he's South African. I haven't figured out why yet, but it just makes sense to me.

Zaeed is an Arabic name also.

It's an alternate spelling for the name Zayd.

His accent could be said to be israeli (his family could have members that were educated in england, hence the northern british accent).. but his first name is most certainly middle eastern, as is his last name, which is most likely of muslim influence, not european. Italian names that sound like masani are mostly influenced by the fact that they were invaded like 1000 years ago by muslims.

zaeed is arabic, hes not being pedantic. austrailia is very simmilar to america in the way that it doesnt really have much influence on the rest of the worlds names, mostly the rest of the world influences their names. For instance Brisbi is mostly of german and french origin.

I humbly stand corrected.

corrected.

Anyway, maybe he's adopted by arabic parents, who knows... things like this happen for various reasons.  My surname is Swedish, I have highly mixed eurasian ancestry, and I have a vaguely western accent (it's gone from Scottish to English to vaguely American to altogether buggered up :/)
