Playing an Asari in ME4 would just be weird...
Really? I think that's the only thing that would make me even consider this idea.
You could base the game around finding employment as a stripper or joining a merc band...

^How do you know that since there is almost no game in which you play as alien in modern SF games?
^ Taking out MMOs most of modern SF games are now either pure F/TPShooters or like ME 2 - wanabeRPG/Shooters hybrids but still with locked up "race" selection to human only characters.
And like I said, IT'S OPTIONAL!
You don't have to play as alien if you don't want to, but for those who want( and there will be a lot of them) can play as alien.
^ True enough... however i can hardly imagine for example Turian as "pro-human" fanatic walking under cerberus banner <_<
Also ME4 will be long after Earth is saved.
It's going to be about something different thing entirely.
^This would work only under assumption that ME 4-6 will be made under "wings" of completely new developing team free form pro cerberus paranoia
Replys in bold.

Shepard's kid would just be called Shepard in game and that is just stupid
Human or not s/he will be called Shepard because game doesn't have name recognition system.

Is Garrus, Tali or any other alien on Normandy pro-Human?
Is any human but Miranda, Jacob and some of the crew pro-Human?

If there are anymore games in ME universe (which I hope there will be) They will likely take place before the ending of ME2 and will not feature Shepard or a plot to save the galaxy.

Here's my opinion. Shepard is not the center of the galaxy. Yes, he is one of the most important people in it, but not all the stories told need to be about him or his family. I would much rather have a new main character, IF (and that's a big IF) BioWare continues to make Mass Effect games after the trilogy is over.
It's EA they will milk the cashcow dry.

I think a DLC, similar to DAO's Lianna would be interesting. Something where you gain stuff you can bring into your ME game and perhaps receive the occassional email from your offspring on your personal console after playthrough of the DLC. For instance, we lost our lil' apartment if you played Pinnacle Station, when we proceeded to ME2. So, revisiting this would be similar to DAO's "Warden's Keep," in game. However, they did give us LOTSB, which is a much savvier keep than our old appartment, with much of the same capability.
So, a central mate that many of us have tried is the Asari Consort in ME1. Since she had insight to Shepard's character and we later learned in ME2 that she came under fire for bad dealings, she may have been "evil" enough to have sought procreation through this brief encounter with Shep, to somehow hold a greater seat of power.
Consort + Shep = plausable offspring fem or male, and would make for an interesting side DLC. Could call the DLC = "The Sins of the Father."
I agree with Mesina2 that ME4 would take us to new lights. IMHO, it would seem more likely that Bioware would take us back in time to fight the Batarian or Turian wars...something like that, as they often do after game invention to garner more interest and money for the company. Think of the latest Halo release...we go back to the beginning. So, perhaps we get to play the Illusive Man, or Captain Andrews or something similar.
Namaste,

QFT for short answer.
Slightly longer answer: It would come off as stale & lazy. Would make it seem the ME universe is all about Shepard & nobody else (which is pretty much the case with the triology, but I digress). There are still other characters, races, idea's, planets to explore/exploit. Would be a waste to recycle Shepard & his surroundings. Sure, some cameo's in later games from locations or squadmates affilated with Shepard would be cool but nothing more.

If they are going with the same voiced character as ME as opposed to the more open DA format. Someone with some conections to the previous game, but in a way that does not bind you too much would be a good base to start from.

Jack likely won't want kids
Ashely probably eventually maybe
Liara's kids would just be Asari (which isn't a bad thing but kinda defeats the "sheps kid" thing)
Femshep can have kids with
Kaiden
Jacob
that's IT.
too limited..too cliche...would cause too many complaints if we're shoe-horned into a "canon" love-interest

Technically Femshep could also have a kid with Liara.
