Ok so I see I'm in the minority here.

It's really not a bad place to be; I like it here too.

But is it so awful to expect developes not to fall prey to sexualization in their attempt to reach for aunthenticity?

I don't see a problem with wanting this, even if some others seem to think it's bad/"unrealistic" to expect it; I feel that the clothes (or lack thereof) that Isabella wears are probably supposed to represent Varric's portral of her in the narative, but that still doesn't mean that I have to like seeing her "dressed" that way.

In Dragon Age Origins, Alistair was in the Fort Drakon dungeon, wearing nothing but his underwear!

So now that I have one example of showing some skin, *looks at thread title* Why must every man be overly sexualised???

And you deal with that not by putting woman in modest clothes, but by putting men into revealing ones. I just hate how people make women seem oppressed and a victim - THAT is what makes them seem weak.

On the other hand, maybe perhaps there's a reason we don't see gymnasts with, say, E cup...breasts.

Time to start a campaign to have every significant female in DA games to be a dwarf. Because no one has the courage to overly sexualize the female dwarf. The cowards.

A question for folks saying: would she really wear that?

Right, she's not a knight or a warrior. She's a swashbuckler/pirate, so do you really expect her to wear plate armour or chainmail etc.? (Granted, chainmail is a more viable option, but still...)

The only other thing she could really wear minus what she does now is leather. In terms of combat, wearing clothes that cover more won't exactly stop a blade anymore than what she wears now.

Now then, as much as I hate to admit this due to being a writer (in my defence, I haven't written much about fantasy or medieval stuff in several years), I have no idea how much leather offers protection wise. But I'd guess it's not much still.

Anyways, I don't even know why I bothered responding here... or why I even bother opening these threads and reading them.

Edit: You know what as well? The day I try to cater to people who don't like swearing, sex etc. is the moment I'll stop writing. If her outfit fits the character, then it fits end of story. By removing it, the character would not be who she is, as she wouldn't be authentically portrayed.

And then everyone would be dwarves.

Win-win.

Only if they're a f/f love interest too.

And as romantically aggressive as Sie.

The male cast are all handsome, with perfect bodies. Why not bring that up as well? That's just the way video games and movies are. People like looking at sexy men and women, that's just the way it is.

And perhaps if there were, Gymnastics would be a much more popular sport.

I wouldn't say that men in DA:O were Overly handsome... Perfect bodies? Maybe, depending on your taste.

You limit yourself.  They offer many more things to objectify them over than simple breast size.

Musculature.  Fitness.

Flexibility.

So you say, but don't forget she was wearing a lot more in Origins, in a location that would have made a lot of sense for her to be dressed like she is in DA2. Which is the real Isabella?

Which is why female Gymnastics are more popular than the male ones.

Yes, and the same subjectivity applies to the women as well.

In any case, IMO, Isabella is designed in a way that supports her character, other female characters are not presented in the same way, and Bioware developers are generally quite sensitive to these issues, so I don't see any problem with DA2 regarding the thread topic.

Yes. I love gymnast women, they are built awesome. Though for some reason they TEND to have unattractive faces.

I suppose depending on your views of what a feminist is, characters such as Isabella can be viewed as either a strong, liberated woman taking control of her own sexuality or a female chauvinist pig who willfully exploits herself thus feeding into the chauvinist male ideals that a woman's worth is in her assets so to speak. That by taking control of the fact that she's being objectified she can enter onto a level playing field as her male counterpart. Regardless she is what she is, she has the right to be what she is or made how she was made and we should respect that.

Personally, I don't agree with the way she's dressed but I suppose I treat it as the same way I would treat a friend of mine dressing in that way, with acceptance. As with people in the real world characters don't all have to be covered up, they can dress in a provocative manner. I don't know enough about Isabella's character to make any assumptions but I would assume the outfit is reflective of her behavior and personality. Maybe there will be an in game option for Hawke to politely suggest she buy some pants...and maybe a bolero jacket(kidding).

In my opinion is Isabella really championing the campaign for strong, respectable female roles in video games? No, but she is what she is and from what I can tell of her personality so far I feel as though I will in the end be able to look past her giant pirate breasts and bare legs and come to appreciate her for her character.

Lady Desire,

I don't really care how she appeared in DA: O. Admittedly, I don't remember much about the encounter to be honest. (I remember her being in a tavern/inn and not some brothel, correct? She didn't work there either as far as I remember.)

However, my point was if the writers think she would dress a certain way and they then don't follow through with it for fear of upsetting vocal people, then the writers themselves wouldn't be being true to the character.

It's like if I was writing a character in a novel/short story who happened to swear a lot because it fit. But if I change that based on worrying about people's thoughts, the character wouldn't ring true.

At the end of the day, it simply doesn't matter anyway.

I've got to admit that I have no interest in the vast majority of arguments that go on here though and it's not because I'm a fan-boy or anything like that, but it's simply because I don't take games very seriously. Nor do I look at every little detail and think, 'god, that little detail has ruined something for me'.

Edit: Darkwing, you raised an interesting point. People who are like you mentioned (that being female chauvinist pig). However, people that are like that, there's normally reasons for it I wager. It should be interesting getting to know Isabella's character, assuming we get to really dig deep with regard to finding out why she is how she is.

No need to blast him so much guys, the OP kinda has a point. Because somebody wants more subtle sexuality in a game (an industry that, frankly, really needs it) doesn't mean they are a ultra-puritan who never had sex and throws crosses at passing womans.

If not the whole game, then Isabella is really overdone, a clear successor of Miranda. I mean, they spent a lot of time to craft a lovely face, but whenever she talks it's hard not to notice the huge... tracts of land. Combined with the fact they look just about ready to burst out, it's really exagerated and, yes, eye-catching, but not in the right ways. More like a distraction from what is supposed to be more important stuff, namely what she's actually saying.

So, for me it's impossible to take this character seriously because of the outifit, like when Miranda lamented her oh so burdening super-womanhood while wearing a catsuit that left almost nothing to the imagination. From personnal experience, a woman being confident and/or proud of her body doesn't immediately mean she prances around half-naked all the time, it's like it being pretty defines her entire personnality, which is questionable at best. I mean, at least cover the cleavage a bit and give her some damn pants.

But we can't say the game as a whole is oversexualized yet, not when we haven't even played the demo yet.

Indeed, it is not to say these women are without reason and i'm going to momentarily assume she is one of them she likely does have some reasons. Perhaps the armada is primarily male, or maybe these are just the people she grew up with and it was easier to take control of her image than be a victim of it. I do hope we get to dig into her character to find a real person beyond the dangerous sultry pirate bravado. We already saw a bit of it if you watched the demon from yesterday's live chat and It gave me hope for her.
