TJ,

Thanks for the response btw. I should really research medieval arms and armor because I'm tempted to try my hand at writing a story set in the time period again.

Regarding the whole combat thing and this isn't aimed at you, TJ, especially as I know it doesn't bother you (at least not much I don't think):

Shouldn't people just remember it's only a game? It really shouldn't influence your view of the entire game and if it does... well, I'm not going to say anything more on that. I think it speaks for itself.

Not a problem.  Posted Image

If you are thinking of writing a story set in that period, you should do some research.  Even if you don't intend to be historically accurate, it will give you a base for what you do want to include.

To your last point - no, it doesn't bother me much.  To me, I don't like that they felt the need to completely re-do the character, but it is what it is.  I'm not crying into my keyboard or console over it, and it doesn't ruin the game for me - not even close.

I don't mind the way she looks - she's not my type, but it doesn't bother me.  I don't mind the outfit at all, in general.  I just think it makes no sense to wear that when expecting to be in a fight.

However, as you say, it is just a game, and if this is the only complaint people have about it, they should be pretty pleased, overall.  Or at least, I'd think so.

Yep, exactly. There's a difference between saying you dislike something and then raging on the internet about it. There's also a difference between disliking something but not letting it cloud your overall view of a game.

Honestly, I think the only reason I view these forums is partly because of the replies. The way a lot of people go on (and that's if they're not trolling), you'd think their life depended on the game having the one feature they want or having something done the way they want it. And even if that was in or a particular element was done the way they wanted it done, they'd still find something to complain about. But that's the internet in a nutshell and the forum will be the same (if not worse) at release.

I mean, I like games but I don't get worked up over them. ;)

Decided I'm just going to avoid the forum at release, which is what I should have done with Mass Effect 2's release.

The majority of gamers are male and I think that most of us prefer having a cute girl as a companion than a huge ugly muscle mountain woman as one.

The female Hawke has to be cool and hot too.

As said before sexiness sells we judge a lot by using our visual sense if all the characters were plain and the landscape were plain I don't think the game would sell well.

Eye candy banzai!

I`d rather have a 6.5 tall muscular brute of a chic, than a 5 foot tall anime schoolgirl for a companion, If I am going out to kill dragons.

Give it time.  If it is all about eye candy, you will soon have to look at more hulking male half-naked spartan-esque abs and thighs too. :) The number of female gamers is growing and will continue to grow.  :)

A new report by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) claims that 38 percent of all gamers are female, with the average female gamer spending 7.4 hours per week playing games.

Despite the high percentage of female game players in today's market, an International Game Developers Association (IGDA) study suggest that women only make up 12 percent of the games industry workforce.

They make up around 2/3 of online game players also.  :)

I am soooo tired of these girls whining about how girls are over sexualised.

So are men! Hello have you seen the threads for Verric, Celever (spelling?), anders and Fenris? They are pretty much filled with fangirls screaming LI and its the same with the female threads. Why? Because most fans are perverts thats why. Everybody in games, real life, movies and magazines sexualise both male and female but for some reason its just terrible when it happens to girls.

Fans aren't perverts. People just don't like to look at ugly things if they don't have to. When you make a videogame, you get the chance to idealize your characters, so even your stocky, hairy dwarf is pretty sexy. I'd say it's less of a sexualization as it is an idealization. The game is fantasy in more ways than one, after all.

Does that include Farmville?  Because the average demographic of Farmville is middle-aged women in office jobs.

I would guess it includes all online games, yes, as they were fairly specific about the other segments.

If they broke it down to the Halo's and the Call of Duties, I am sure the % is much higher to the male end.  RPGs would have many more women than the fps sort of ones (I am the only one of many female gamer friends that like those - many like FB style games, but its my computer techie friend who likes Farmville, but that is a 'he'.  :)

Gaming is more and more just becoming a part of popular mainstream culture.  The numbers will close, although the genre numbers will probably be skewed heavily in some cases by gender.

EDIT: this article was written I believe back in 2008, but it has interesting stats and numbers that show that a lot of the popular perception of women and gaming is outdated.  Article here

I don't know of the same could be said for DA2. If the fanbase here on BSN is any comparison, there is a mighty even split between women & men, so the design of Lady Hawke needs to fit both their tastes with no preference to one gender over the other.

If Bioware were only interested in the male audience, we'd see a larger chested, skimpier Hawke I imagine. But we haven't. She seems to fit the median.

Just... sayin'...

The fanbase on this forum is Split evenly,
But this fanbase is only about .5% of the total player base if even that.
Most players of dragon age were Definatley male.

I dinno. Some of my characters I've deliberately made incredibly unattractive for cheap giggles.

Nothing is more hilarious when The Hero of the Galaxy Mr. Shepard looks like a half formed Easter Island statue with a mouth that goes down to his chin.

Again. There aren't numbers to prove this one way or another. I know that Fable, a fantasy RPG made for the PC (and ported to consoles) is dominated very evenly by women. As for DA:O, there aren't numbers to prove it either way. But since it is made as a PC game, a Fantasy game, and an RPG... All three categories that are VERY popular among lady gamers. Hell, the power of the female fanbase can be proven just by typing in 'Dragon Age' into Fanfiction.net or deviantart.com. Its pretty overwhelming.

I've had this argument before, but to be frank, I've never had any conclusive evidence that suggests most DA players are male. This is almost entirely based on assumption. Perhaps most DA players on console systems are male, but it seems pretty evenly divided on the PC as far as fan reaction seems to provide evidence for.

Pffft. I've known women with Merril's build rocking a lot more than D cups. Trust me. Nature can be pretty generous in this regard. Breasts scare a lot of people on this site. They aren't scary once you get to know them. :wizard:

Whenever I see the silly "the majority of gamers are male" argument I smell the fear that the secret clubhouse is being invaded, that there will soon be doilies on the table and the risks of getting girl germs will skyrocket.

As said before sexiness sells we judge a lot by using our visual sense if all the characters were plain and the landscape were plain I don't think the game would sell well.

Explain how Oblivion sold so well then, even before cosmetic mods were made.  The landscape might be attractive but the people and especially the faces were not.
