Im just about to play a vanguard... but id imagine heavy since it would damage a single target for a very large amount.

Idk what the specialisation for the passive do.

I think that Heavy Charge is better than the Area version.

The difference between Champion and Destroyer is minor, basically unnoticeable. That said, Champion is probably slightly better due to quicker cooldowns and better Paragon/Renegade points bonus.

Prefer Heavy Charge - the second of time dilation makes point blank head shot that much easier. Shields are recharged to 100%.

Prefer Champion - Renegade/Paragon points, faster cooldowns and more health.

Heavy Charge because of the shield recharge increase, when you've charged into the enemy you want your shields to be as high as possible not rely on the tiny stumble that Area Charge might give to nearby enemies. Time dilation is more of a handy bonus.

Champion because recharging Charge as fast as possible is more important than doing a tiny bit more damage with your shotgun. End of the day most enemies won't survive either the shotgun itself or the melee that comes immediately after it.

Speaking of Vanguards, I've just finished the Shadow Broker DLC and i was concerned the Shadow Broker and Vasir might take a while given that close range combat sounded quite suicidal... as it turns out i've never had such easy boss fights...

The Shadow Broker attacks so slowly in close range that Charge will always be recharged by the time you need it.  Lair really showcases Vanguard combat well, not only with the (perhaps poorly balanced) boss fights, but with the emphasis on spread out battles as well.  The Vanguard shines when you get ambushed as Liara's hacking program opens the door.

Indeed. I found myself charging the shadow broker, shooting him square in the face with the Claymore as he stumbled, backing off and hiding behind a pillar and repeated that as many times as required to beat him. Vasir was a little stupid though, i spent the entire fight wandering around in the open, only ducking behind cover on rare occasions, charging her the instant it recharged, getting a quick shotgun blast in and her teleporting away from me, repeat as many times as necessary.

That encounter was entertaining. You basically have the run of the area (except the last fight when the drones turn up, that caught me out the first time and i rushed into cover and accidently jumped over it and died ><). Some of them split up and go to the overlooking area so you charge up and shoot them in the face. Some of them wander around near plenty of cover so you can shoot them and hide for a moment. Only difficult enemy is the Vanguard (ironically) though i can't deny i didn't have some fun intentionally making her go flying off the ship :P

Just finished the Recruit Tali mission now. Charging around madly in the middle got me to the other end in no time. Went up the left, dug in for a moment before whipping out Cain, then gunned it down with an Inferno Locust. Barely took any time at all.

I think Heavy charge is far superior to the area version, at least on insanity. Champion is used almost universally, because ultimately you get a more bang for your buck, although I like Destroyer myself.

Does the time dilation of Heavy Charge make any difference if you're not opposed to the use of Pause? Does the time dilation also increase running speed like Adrenaline Rush does?

The time dilation lasts long enough to quickly line up a shot to ensure it hits, not move anywhere. Besides, if you do move away you lose the point blank damage bonus which just defeats the entire point of Charging in the first place.

Pausing it is only worth doing if you want to fire off an Overload from an ally to strip the enemy of its shielding the instant after you land the charge or if you want to scan around to check for enemies and place some ally powers to cripple enemies. I don't use it to aim the shot as it kinda spoils the action. If you do prefer to do it that way you still shouldn't use Area Charge. The extra shielding is more important than anything else since the Area blast will rarely hit more than 1 enemy.

Passive evolution - If I play an imported character I go with destroyer because I don't need the boost to paragon/renegade scores. As kronner has said the difference in recharge time is miminal. But I also, especially early in the game, like the weapon damage bonus to help the ammo effects with the shotgun.

Base cooldown on charge is 6 sec ( biotic cooldown upgrade does not affect charge )

Evolution percent cooldown ( theo ) Cooldown ( Kronner measured by fraps )
------------- ------------ -------------------------- ----------------------------------------
Champion  15%                 5.1                                          4.90
Destroyer    9 %                 5.46                                        5.20

What this means that if you charged everytime you could based on cooldown only, then for every 23 Destroyer charges you could have charged 25 champion times.
