First off I apologize if someone has already answered this question, I've scrolled through about ten pages of questions and seen bits and pieces answered.

So I played through and beat Origins and loved it (thanks to Bioware for another stellar game!!!).  I've been meaning to go back and play the various DLC chapters but have been distracted (mostly by Mass Effect 2).  I finally sat down last week, and downloaded every available DLC chapter, to the tune of about $60.

I started with Witch Hunt, imported my character and my equipment load out had changed.  From reading the forums it appears this was an intentional decision by Bioware.  I finished the DLC in a couple of hours, and had purchased or obtained a lot of items (runes, equipment, etc.).  The credits rolled and I loaded up my character in Origins and...my original equipment had returned and everything I purchased or obtained in Witch Hunt had vanished.

I thought for sure this was a glitch so I contacted EA Support, which turned out to be ZERO help.  So I am turning to the Bioware community for help.  Is this a glitch or did Bioware release DLC content that a) you can't import your equipment into and B) that anything you earn in the DLC doesn't stay with your character when you finish?

Let me first start by simply stating the timeline for the games and dlcs:

Dragon Age: Origins; Dragon Age :Origins - Awakening; Golems of Amgarrak; Witch Hunt.

Certain dlc items in Origins will not import into any later module, e.g. Blood Dragon Armour and anything connected to the Stone Prisoner dlc. That is (kind of) intentional and not a glitch as such.

You can unlock certain items in the other dlcs which become available in Origins and Awakening (and the other dlcs if memory serves), whether from a pre-existing save or a new character.

I think what you were trying to do was something like this: (1) play Origins a bit, but haven't finished; (2) imported that unfinished Origins character into Witch Hunt; (3) complete Witch Hunt; (4) reloaded unfinished Origins character.

At (4) you are thinking that having finished Witch Hunt you will obtain everything from having completed it back into Origins.

Two things: (i) that assumes you imported your finished Witch Hunt character into Origins (which you cannot do); (ii) you are assuming they are the same character (they're not).

More directly:

(a) you can import certain items and equipment from module to module, but not all.

(B) items 'stay' with the character only if they can be imported or, with respect to specific dlc unlockable items, the items are unlocked.

Thanks for the reply...

I beat Origins and used the save that's created that allows you to explore the world post-game.  That's the file I uploaded into Witch Hunt.

I gotta say this is incredibly frustrating.  Limiting what items can be brought into DLC, and then greatly restricting what transfers back to the primary save file, effectively makes the DLC little, mini stand alone games and in my opinion makes the DLC not worth the money or time.  What's the point of completing DLC if it contributes nothing (or in best case scenario - very little) back to the main campaign.

I guess what makes this so bizarre is that Bioware had a clear example to follow on how to do it right - Mass Effect I & II.   In both games the DLC is accessible from the main game and you keep all levels, weapons, armor, equipment, etc.  It's seamless.  It's almost as if Bioware intentionally chose to screw this up for some bizarre reason, which is so difficult to understand considering how absolutely fantastic their games have historically been designed.  I gotta say I really regret purchasing the DLC and am re-considering my pre-order for the sequel.

I just don't get it.  Have they ever explained why they choose to do it this way???????

Explanation? No, I don't believe they ever did.

As I wrote above, unlocked special items can be found in Origins but those are linked to achievements.

Mass Effect had a proper new game plus mode; all stats, weapons and equipment were carried over.

Mass Effect 2 has a limited new game plus mode. You get some bonuses for having completed the game, and/or importing a character, but with the exception of heavy weapons weapons do not get carried over. Stats aren't carried over. Armour is though.

The way which DA works is that a character from one module is seen as different from the character you imported from. To the game they are different characters. The unlockables are for new characters really.

In Origins, after you beat the game, there is a disclaimer that the events take place during the main campaign. Sort of like a deleted scenes approach if that makes sense. The events in Witch Hunt would make no sense there; plus the mechanics of the game changed since Awakening as well. (Actually that changed mechanic could be a reason too.)
