It was probably all his fussing about how what we're doing is dangerous and man he hates being in dangerous situations and he always struck me as afraid of not just dying but any sort of hardship. Justice basically calls him out on this in some of his banters (basically saying if he thinks mages are so oppressed, why doesn't he DO anything about it, and Anders handwaving it away saying he's too busy looking out for Number One to worry about other mages) (waaaaah, poor Justice!
).
That could be taken more to mean that he's just incredibly selfish rather than cowardly, I suppose. I'm looking forward to seeing how he's changed.
Granted, I haven't played Awakening, so I don't know all of his dialogues.. I definitely got the vibe that Anders was a coward. But a loyal coward, at least. I actually kind of liked that flaw about him, I thought it made him more interesting. But then I had a semi-crush on Jowan, so spinelessness doesn't really bother me.
I think the fact that he kept fighting in spite of his reservations says something about him. I also think whether I would prefer it or not, that's a trait he's going to end up phasing out with the new changes to his character.
