Greetings, to ya'll in the Neverwiener forums.

So, I've been thinking about playing through the OC and MotB with a monk character, but being that the campaigns are centered around the Silver Sword, I was wondering if making a longsword focused monk was a good idea or not.  Compared to a DEX based build with a finessed unarmed strike, would making a STR based longsword focused monk be a good idea?  I could still go for a DEX based longsword user, but then it's a trade-off between boosting AC and DEX based skills instead of AB and damage.  If only universal swords were finessable....

So what do ya'll think?

Check this out : Silver Sword Fix

i did the Silver Short Sword and it worked great .. other than that, fine points of PC building just ain't my forte

nb. the Silver Sword - as a universal sword - differs from the usage of a Longsword, i believe. ( it might not take Focus, Specialization, etc )

Making a longsword monk is, actually, a bad idea. For monks, the best combat styles are either unarmed (with lots of monk levels) or kamas (which can be used in a flurry of blows). A longsword will give you neither of these.

[SPOILER]: Don't become attached to your silver sword, you don't get to keep it.

I tried a Monk/Fighter mix I've used quite a bit & I really bit the big one on the Build!
If you do go Monk...I would suggest go for the full Epic Monk.

It would be doable if you just want to do it for fun. Monks don't actually lose that much for using a longsword in terms of defensive abilities, so you aren't going to be completely crippled. If you stay pure Monk you would be a lot less effective as an offensive combatant, but you would have all those defensive boosts and immunities.

Multiclassing and focusing more on a class that can be effective with a longsword with the Monk added for flavor isn't much of an option this case. Basically, everything Monk would be giving you is virtually worthless already, unusable with a longsword out, too dependent on Monk level to be effective without being almost pure, too high in level to be practical to actually get, not worth the inability to use an armor and shield outside very specific builds, or much easier and more effectively acquired from different classes.

Thanks for the input, guys. I think the simplest solution would be to use the Silver Sword Kama fix that kevL linked me to. That way, the sword will be finessable, usable with flurry of blows, and my AB and AC won't suffer.

Thank goodness for SushiSquid's fix! Now using the plot item effectively isn't an onerous task.

Take some fighter levels.

You're only going to need 11 Monk levels for Greater Flurry.

question about monks: all I keep hearing and reading is go with kamas or unarmed, but I was thinking of making a club-wielding monk (well 2 clubs actually) would this make any sense? certainly feels like an original idea :P
