Movies You Hate That Most Adore

Another picture: Raging Bull. I call it Raging Bore. When I first saw this, it was a bad reel which revealed the microphone in nearly every indoor scene. Just not worth the time to try again, IMO.
Casablanca - I like every star in this one; just cannot swallow the film. It is always puzzled me why I must see things so much differently than the remaining world. I much prefer The African Queen.
Now folks can offer crit on my taste, but I am a bit more interested on other films that find you swimming against the current of popularity.

Slumdog Millionaire which pretty much describes all that I dislike about cinema. Exoticist, reductionist, sensationalist rubbish.
Also, anything by Quentin Tarantino that isn't Jackie Brown. Jackie Brown is pretty decent. The rest of his work is just self-masturbatory nonsense.

Aliens. It reduced that lovely little monster to cannon fodder. Add to that the painful fashion in which Cameron attempts to squeeze the traditional family unit in there, and you've got yourself a major stinker.

This. Thisthisthisthisthis! I agree with every damn word, Grapey. I'd like to add the sacharine-sweet nausea-inducing morality play that was A.I. And to add to the catalogue of crimes by those three Liquidgrape mentioned, I'll add any movie by Cameron that isn't Terminator or Piranha II: Flying Killers, 28 Days Later (there's not a day goes by that I don't want to kick Boyle in the nuts for this absolute toss) and Sunshine (bad science masquerading as correct science irritates the ****** outta me)... oh, and Pulp Fiction - admit it to yourself, you only like that movie because you saw it when you were in your teens and you thought it was clever and "spoke to your demographic", well newsflash, it's just dumb. Nostalgia don't make it any better at all.
And any pointless remake of a J-Horror movie. Read your subtitles or get the f*ck out of my cinema, you cretins.
I could go on all day at this game...

QFT!
I never understood why Aliens seems to be more popular than the original Alien, or Alien 3, both of which are miles above Aliens in my eyes. Alien 3 achieved some of the same claustrophobic horror that the original did, while Aliens was a dumb action movie, where the previously near-impossible to kill baddie had somehow turned into swarms of baddies that went down like flies.

Requiem For a Dream,Eraserhead or basically any sort of film made by a Director while wanking over himself. I hate these "art films" that are just a collection of randomness for stoners to watch and make meaning out of.
I agree - haven't seen Eraserhead, but didn't much enjoy Requiem For a Dream. A good story is what I too look for in films. Nothing wrong with being artistic, as long as being artistic isn't the end-all-be-all of the movie - there's got to be more in it than that.

I quite liked the LotR books, but hated the films. Or maybe that's why I hated the films: they completely failed to capture the atmosphere for me, seeming to distil out all the worst bits and leaving the subtleties behind. Eleventy billion hours of "epic everything with added epic!" becomes a bit wearing after a while.Azjurai wrote...
I can't stand the Lord of the Rings movies, or Titanic. Doesn't really help the case I couldn't stand TLotR books either however. Titanic put me to sleep (literally) and TLotR movies I found bad enough to leave the theater and go sit in a cafe until friends finished watching it.
As for Titanic, it had to be one of the most slushy, sentimental and dubiously represented yawn-fests going.

I don't so much hate Tarantino films as I'm utterly baffled by their popularity.
Avatar, it may be cliche to say this but it really was like Dances with Wolves in space. It was so predictable and boring. I had people telling me it was the greatest film ever but being utterly unable to explain why they even liked it.

Spielberg's films drive me nuts pretty much for that reason. He always goes for the very visual approach, lots of special effects and drama, but once you strip away the veneer there's usually not much left. Watching his films always leaves me feeling pretty unfulfilled.Druss99 wrote...
I can't stand Steven Spielberg movies the man doesn't even try to make sense, he actually said it himself that he doesn't have to make sense. Jurassic Park 2 reduced me to a walking rant for about 3 weeks after I saw it. Can anyone explain the whole T-rex on a boat thing? It made no sense at all, then there was the child doing gymnastic-fu on the Raptors. Also what he helped do to the Transformers didn't amuse me.
Schindler's List was an exception, but not exactly cheery viewing.

And Inglourious Basterds.
And Lost Highway. Never really liked Lynch movies. There are much more deeper, better and even more psychedelic movies.
Curious case of Benjamin Button - so pathetic and sentimental.
And my biggest hate - The Shawshank Redemption. IMDB top 1, best movie ever made - What! My inner film critic is screaming.

The list of top movies among critics always just seem to be the ones people expect them to say because everyone else says they are the best films ever. Never understood the fuss that's made of Citizen Kane it's just boring. Not a particularly bad film or anything and i don't hate it just don't understand why theres so much critic ****** over it.
But critics usually know why would they choose that movies. Its because what it was back there. I am not fan of Orson Welles either ( I agree with what Bergman said - that he just had big ego) but Citizen Kane changed cinema in very significat way. Came with new narration - new way of storytelling, many sound inventions and Welles inovative cinematic style. It came with new way of directing movies, that havent been used before (well not that much) and are still used. He is also one of a first auteur directors, along with french director Renoir or Bresson.
But I understand what you meant. It just critics looks at movies in different way that ordinary viewers.
Edit: There goes my english.
