In ME2 im not too skillful at using shotguns... as i can't seem to get close enough to the enemies without either getting shot down quickly or without enemies moving round the cover attacking me from behind... and my charge seems to do a fat load of good except knock them over... though it once repelled a krogan charge.
Im normally one to attack from Medium to long range.
Any tips i could use. I so far got one of the DLC armours raising my base barrier to over 300 and i got the barrier extra skill (from second start game).
And so far im using the Geth plasma shotgun plus the phalanx heav. pistol and the first smg.
Also with the Arc projector (which actually works beautifully against vorcha packs).
When i do the collector ship quest... should i learn sniper (which i like using a lot) or get the Claymore - is that better then the gethy?
Vanguard on Hardcore.

Geth Plasma Shotgun really doesn't go well with Vangaurd. Not unless you know the maps and can be sure you'll have the space to fully charge a shot before you charge, though that would be overkill on Hardcore. Problem with picking up a sniper rifle or assault rifle is that it encourages you to play further back (unless you feel like using Mattock for charging). Claymore will be overkill against regular enemies but the slightly tougher enemies will certainly feel the pain, it sets you up if you want to try it out for Insanity. Specially if you have the Locust SMG which gives you all the power you need for those long range moments.
The less time you spend stripping defences the better. Pick an enemy you can shoot and hide behind cover (if you have to pause when you impact to aim the shot better). Vanguard is *the* class you must die on to understand it better. The only times it gets frustrating to die are when charge doesn't work or you accidently jumped over cover or you plain missed a point blank range shotgun ><

Like Evilsod said, Geth Plasma Shotgun isn't a good choice for the Vanguard as it's more of a medium range weapon where the Vanguard excels in point blank range. I recommend the Eviscerator for damage and Scimitar for clip size and ammo (able to constantly stagger the enemy especially with Incindiary ammo). I personally pick Sniper Rifle training on mine because the Locust covers mid range so your only problem now is long range. Claymore is a good choice, but you will have to get use to doing the reload meele trick for it to be effective.
Since the Vanguard was the first class I finished on Hardcore, I can tell you right now that your beginning are going to be a bit frustrating. I've died quite afew times but most of it was due to my reckless charging. My only advice is use charge when the enemy has been stripped of their defences enough that one clip of your shotgun will finish them off (in the case of the Claymore, this means 1-shot kills). Make sure you have cover to run back to after your charge, and remember to meele after every shot. It adds damage in between shot cooldown time. And when your shields are down and you have no cover to run back to, charge again as a maxed out charge will fully recover your shields.

I degraded to veteran... kept getting killed and it got too hard.
I find the gethy really helps as i can't get in close without dying...
Im mainly using the charge when there's only one enemy left and they are already near me. Or used against husks.

You have maxed charge out asap to Heavy Charge right? And also gone to get the Biotic Cooldown upgrade and Champion skill? Veteran is a bad choice to learn Vanguard since it sends the enemy flying, Hardcore is the best way if you wanna avoid Insanity and still play Vanguard effectively.
If you don't really want to use Charge i'd advise changing to another class like Soldier and coming back to Vanguard when you feel a bit better about aiming. Without Charge you aren't really enjoying the Vanguards highrisk highreward strategy. I've got the Sentinel, Engineer and Infiltrator to play through on Insanity after this and i get the feeling i'm gonna miss Charge...

Biotic warlock - everybody dies a lot learning to play vg. One thing that helped me, and was not obvious was that when in shotgun range you can release the left trigger ( Xbox ) and still aim fine with the joysticks. It allows you to move and aim faster.

use Eviscerator/Scimitar if you're going for another weapon training
don't aim down the sight just point blank shoot your enemy but do try to shoot it at their heads
if you are thinking if getting another weapon training and not get claymore i would advice getting AR training because of Mattock, add that gun with Inferno Rounds and Squad Cryo and you'll pretty much decimate
if you go for the sniper its not going to feel like your playing as a vanguard because charging while scoping for a kill will end up you being dead even if you try to point black shoot enemies it wouldn't be able to take down an enemy on hardcore as fast as a shotgun or Mattock rifle
trust me i tried it before
but its really up to you if you want a versatile vanguard that snipes from a far that cool
but in my opinion if you really want sniping go for infiltrator soldier or engineer
