Dragon Age, Random sound studdering then freeze.

Problem: At random Dragon Age: Origins, will freeze and then crash. In fact, this happens to only my Bioware games (Mass effect 2, Dragon age). This problem has happened in combat (While playing Mass Effect 2) and when just walking around (While in Dragon Age). When it freezes, the sound is studdering and the screen just freezes. Then my keyboard does not respond at all (No ctl+alt+delete to exit game)
Info: My PC exceeds the reccomended requierments by quite a long shot.
If you have no idea what the problem could be, could you please link me a patch for the game?
Please help me with this issue. Thanks again!

That said, if you post your hardware specs and your OS info (and what graphics settings you're playing at) we can troubleshoot more. And of course, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.

1) You'll want to make sure you're running the latest Vista updates. We've seen some issues, for example, with folks who are running Vista w/o SP2.
2) You'll want to make sure your Nvidia card is updated with the latest drivers as well. The latest is ver. 266.58, which posted in mid-January... http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.html
3) If those steps don't help, we could look at the 9800GT itself. You list it as being overclocked. DA:O will sometimes behave badly with either overclocked (or in your case, factory overclocked) GPUs and CPUs. Let's table that idea for the moment until you can try those other steps. Let us know what happens.
RI
BTW... it is usually slow on the boards over the weekend... so someone may be on in the new week who has a further suggestion.

Okay... it appears you've traded a complete system lock up for a crash to desktop... small step forward, if you want to be optimistic! Three things come to mind:

EDIT: Almost forgot, if I didn't mention it before... the Windows pagefile. If you get the time, there are some links about it in the post that's linked to my sig. Angband21 and Gorath may chime in on that topic next week... they're the true experts on it.

I'll be on the road for part of tomorrow, so it may not be here until evening, Central US time. But I'll be sure to check back when I can. Heck, if I had the time, I'd post regular office hours here, like I did when I was teaching.Glad to help.

If i read what you intended me to read then I can say this...
I do normaly have Steam up (I don't have a Dragon Age version of steam) due to I like shopping there. So I'm going to run my game with Steam up, and see what happens. Then I will do it without Steam up, and see what happens. I will post my outcome here.
Thanks again!

No errors. Just kicks me to desktop and says "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working"

Back up your saved games, uninstall Dragon Age completely. Do a complete uninstall/reinstall of your video drivers... there's a link in my sig. Run Windows Update when that's done, just to make sure everything's current. Run CCCleaner or the Windows Clean Boot utility (link in the latest Solutions Rounup, also in sig) and make sure you're only loading what you need to at start up. Then reinstall the game and patch as needed.
That's extreme, I admit. But I am running out of ideas. These boards are a little slow on the weekend, so others may chime in eventually.
Good luck!

Of course, it could just be that someone was stealing Duncan's coffee and he went into a fit of rage....lol.
Anyhow...least you got it working...which is more than can be said for mine (which is half working)....but that's another story, and I ain't gonna hijack your thread...heh.
(I'm browseing the threads for possible solutions...hence why I dropped in here)
I wish you the best for your DA:O gameing.
