I am not the most technical person, so if you can help me, please keep that in mind.
The game crashes, I get the 'Dragon Age has stopped working . . . . Windows is looking for a solution . . . . " box and then I have to close program. I started keeping a log over the past few days to see if I could find some consistency. While not 100%, the situation seems to occur most when I have paused action to direct an other-than main character or while I have selected hold and then select a not-main character.
I do have some extra mods that I downloaded and installed, but crashes occurred even before I installed them
When I installed the game, I installed all the DLC in the package.
I am currently on my 3rd game, and all games have had crash issues.
The crashes appear not to be location related but gameplay related. If I change my tactics I can usually get past the spot, but that kind of defeats one of the features of the gameplay.
The crashes do not appear to have any relationship to the amount of time the computer has been on or the amount of time I have been playing.
Some information about my computer:
Processor Count : 8
Processor: Intel® Core i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz
Display Vendor : ATI
Display Driver Ver.: Direct3D 9.0c [atiu9pag.dll 8.14.1.6095]
Display Memory : 1024
Memory: 8152
Display Device : ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series

Vertex Program: Yes
Render Textures: Yes
RGB32 Render: Yes
Depth Render: Yes
Windows 7 Home Premium
8 GB RAM
64-bit operating system
1 terabyte hard drive
I deleted temp files and disabled background processes to no avail.
While the above scenario is the most frequent crashing situation, it does sometimes happen when I zoom out or pan.

You have a solid system... at what resolution are you playing the game? Also, it's important to make sure your ATI display driver is up to date... don't rely on Windows Update to do this. Go to ATI's site and download the 11.1 drivers if they're not already installed.
In addition, try playing the game without any "enhancements" from the Catalyst software. I have an Nvidia system, so I am not entirely sure what settings you need to check in the ATI Catalyst software, but I know you can let the application (in this case, Dragon Age) control the graphics entirely.

EDIT: Ah... mods. Yes... well... the only way to insure they're not causing instability is to not have them, which means removing them from your override folder and possibly doing a full uninstall/reinstall of the game. Just sayin'.

I am playing the game in 1600 x 900. A TV is my monitor, and this was the best compromise. Graphics detail is very high and texture is high. I play in full screen mode with vertical sync and frame-buffer effects checked.
I am not quite sure what the Catalyst software is, but I will see if I can figure it out.
I did not go to ATI's site, but used the install updated driver button within the device properties. They did not install 11.1, and when I went back to DAO, the sound wasn't working. I did a system restore, opened my game, sound and graphics working. I went to the spot where I had had all the trouble (in the Deep Roads, if you're curious) to try again.
I zoomed out, tried to select either a target (location or enemy, don't recall). Crash. BUT, I decided to try something a little different, I zoomed out, used my directional keys on the keypad to turn the camera in that direction, then selected a target. I was able to do this for all 4 companions and 2 summoned creatures successfully and engage in the resulting battle and continue on.
Before I download anything, or change anything in the Catalyst, I want to see if this was a fluke or if the nature of the problem is between the mouse and the camera angle. I will continue to keep a log of my crashes, I just wish I started it before I installed any mods. There were crashes then, I just didn't record them.
Thank you for your help.

You're welcome. I appreciate your conservative approach to troubleshooting... no need to go poking around in stuff if it is indeed a fluke. If you want to update your video drivers, or learn more about Catalysts, then go to AMD's website (they own the ATI brand now).

I started having this problem again in my current game. This is my 6th game since I first posted. I have used a variety of mods in different games, but only two games had excessive crashing. I sometimes use a mod called Wing of Lilith. It includes a mage robe and the flashy bard outfit. There is no significant problem when I use the mage robe on one of my characters. However, I used the bard outfit in hte game above and in the current game. If the character wearing the bard armor is in my party, I frequently have game crashes. I sold the bard outfit and am still using the mage robes. Odd that one outfit causes crashes and the other does not, but that appears to be the case.

Mods do strange things. It's like old joke:
Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I raise my arm like this."
Doctor: "Then don't raise your arm like that."
