I have a feeling the "Tactics" mechanics of our a.i. party members will piss me off.

Excluding aoe attacks, I feel like there will be situations in where I want to kill off my party members by backstabbing them (is this even possible) if they don't do what you intend for them to do.

Even though I know bioware will make everything nearly perfect in this game, I can still see the "tactics" mechanics of our party members acting stupid, such as:

1.  By "trying to be a hero" and pulling multiple groups of monsters, which won't be your intent a lot of the times.  This always happened to me in games like the ps2 rpg "the summoner" or the personal computer game "dungeon siege.

2.  Not healing when you want your mage to heal.  Yea, I know there is a priority list, but i don't want my knucklehead healing mage to cast some channeling spell and won't stop casting the spell even though, say my tank Allistar, is drastically low on health.  Yea you can use health potions, but I like to conserve them and just have my mage heal.

Easy solution: use the pause function and stop your party members from being idiots.

In the PC version you may even be able to set it so that they take no action at all without you telling them to. I've used this in past BioWare games; not sure if it's present in DA:O.

But still, that will be a hassle. I want a smooth playthrough. I don't want to keep saying, "jesus not again. This idiot party member is trying to get my party killed.

If i see a pattern of this, I'm just going to send my party members back to camp and hire 3 new recruits.

Why do you think this? What that you've seen so far tells you this?

Honestly, having used a similar system in FFXII, I think it will depend on the spacing of the enemies. If you can reliably finish one fight without substantial risk of starting another, then I think you'll just have to turn AI off between battles (I hope there's a 'group AI' toggle like in BG).

Short of that, the only solution to this problem is a fully turn-based game where AI is unnecessary.

Smooth? New party members? That makes no sense. DA:O is an RPG. Manage your party, that's what you are supposed to do.

Why do keep doing this? You haven't even played the game yet, but you keep comparing it to other games, most of which aren't even close to what DA:O claims to be.

Your posts are somehow all alike, you know.

Nomes est omen, perhaps?

Then change their AI as you see fit?

just gamefaqs and this

and a lot of you are missing the point. Of course there is a priority list to tell your a.i. party members what is most important to do. This isn't the issue here, folks.

I'm saying, there will be times when the tactics mechanics is flawed and it doesn't do what you intend them to do. No matter how much you love your party members, they are artificial intelligence and we are humans. They do not respond like humans. I can forsee this situation a plethora of times.

I thought you were supposed to instruct each one of your party members as to what you want them to do...not just control your main character and hope the others keep up.

What??? Where, pray tell,  did you get that knowledge from? We are humans? Who's we? We can be elves and dwarves, you know. Flamebaiting, trolling, thoughtless generalizations, assumptions as facts, and bigotry all in one little post? Wow.

What? So let me get this straight. You don't want to control everything they do, but you'll get pissed if they don't do everything exactly as you want them to?

You seem destined for unhappiness.

This just in!  AI has never been perfect and never will be!  If it's going to be that big of an issue, don't play the game.  Also, what makes you think that after the HUNDREDS OF HOURS that so many highly skilled developers have put into this game the party AI system (which is one of the essential parts of the game, and probably received considerably more attention than several other parts) was overlooked to a point where it may be an issue?

I would trust the AI in this game to respond more appropriately than some humans I can think of.... I don't think you have much to worry about letting it play for you OP.

I hope they got the puppet-mode that NWN2 had. I really had to use that on the tougher fights, else my companions would screw me over.

Although DA:O seems to have a better (programmable!) AI. Still would like a puppet-mode, simply because I'd love to make Morrigan do certain stuf... *evil*

So you know it is going to ****** you off how? Have you played the game yet? Why not actually play the game yourself before complaining about how much an aspect of it is going to ****** you off.

The good news is that you can turn it off completely...or partially...

If you want, you can make it so that they just use a drink when below 50% and nothing beyond that.

The gambit system is one of the best things to ever happen to RPGs. If it doesn't work out in your favor, then the problem is you, not the system.

If you don't want to rely on the mechanic,or don't trust the members, then just pause and make all the decisions yourself, just like turning off the AI in BG2.

I have to disagree with you on this. Some people, myself included, actually like not finding the perfect equation that will result in victory every time.  I was pretty much able to do this on FFXII, with exceptions of the hidden bosses. It made the game very boring and stale IMO.
