The gambit system is one of the best things to ever happen to RPGs. If it doesn't work out in your favor, then the problem is you, not the system.
If you don't want to rely on the mechanic,or don't trust the members, then just pause and make all the decisions yourself, just like turning off the AI in BG2.
I have to disagree with you on this. Some people, myself included, actually like not finding the perfect equation that will result in victory every time. I was pretty much able to do this on FFXII, with exceptions of the hidden bosses. It made the game very boring and stale IMO.
That game was boring and stale regardless, the gambit system was the only thing in it I enjoyed.
