I've been in a number of combat situations where enemies have shot/hit with hurls/spits my party members through obstacles (walls, cave walls, boulders etc.). why does this happen, is it by design? It hardly seems fair when my party's spells and missle attacks seem to need to be by line of sight and are blocked by obstacles.

I'm currently struggling to defeat a particularly difficult foe with a potent missile weapon where the idea of using cover seems pointless as their missle  attacks come through obstacles (I've paused the game and rotated the view and can see it happening). The attacks also seem guaranteed to hit once they've launched whether you move out of the way or dive behind cover. I find this really irritating

Cover doesn't actually do anything in DAO. Your character may duck behind a rock, but that arrow is still going to hit him if his defense is low enough. Trees also don't give you any cover, but nobody should be able to shoot through walls and doors unless a mage is using specific spells that don't need line of sight.

It's not an FPS. The success of the attack is determined at the time the attack is performed. That's why arrows will bend to hit you.

Ah, I wondered if it was the behind the scenes dice rolls calculating the outcome of an attack before it launched. I suppose that the mix of turn-based and real-time play that you can get in DAO can lead to some unusual effects.

I think that my issues where with attacks that had line of sight when launched, but not when they hit. One example of this was walking into a room to see a creature lifting a rock to hurl. It's a fairly slow procedure so the party ran out of the room putting a wall and ceiling in the way, took a sharp turn down a corridor and still got hit by the rock several seconds later.
