So all the white is killing my eyes when I'm scripting, making conversations etc... is there a way to make it not so bright?
Is there a way to change the background color of the toolset from white to something a little easier on the eyes?

Sadly, I haven't found a way to do that, Matt. However, I have found that turning down either the brightness of the screen or reducing the gamma through the software controls can be of use to reduce the eye strain the emissions from the screen can be. For me, with my old CRT, it can be very visually painful after a while. So I take steps to prevent the irritation. I haven't found (and haven't diligently looked) for any way to change the general toolset background colors.

(and if someone does know, I'd love the toolset background in a soft ash grey, please.)

Are there .NET settings somewhere we can fiddle with?

here's a kludgy sort of workaround, but i suppose it's something to note
Change your Desktop or Display Properties .. (right now I've got a soft ash grey, testing) .. you know, right-click desktop->properties->appearance->advanced (winXP here), click the facsimile window that's in bright white and you can change its color (to deep purple if you like that sort of thing) .. now, it doesn't entirely work with the Toolset .. some window-boxes remain white but others don't, but right now I'm finding that the overall barrage of Whiteness is less and so according to Special Relativity there's less matter hitting the eyeballs
hm, i may just keep it this way .. tks for the Idea

I think it uses your window settings for windows. Mine are gray by default and so my tool-set backgrounds are gray making it easy on my eyes. I don't know if gray is the default color by chance though.

Hmm. Interesting. I'll have to give that a shot. I really never thought about changing the Windows settings to do that. That would give me a more visually palatable background for all my document writing as well in Word, Notepad and Wordpad. Hmm, never even thought about it.

It's beautiful! My eyes feel like they are being caressed by dozens of tiny cherubs, each dual-wielding sham-wows.
Thanks so much KevL and dethia. This is really wonderful!

Yay - I havent fiddled with those settings since win95 came out. The grey background is indeed much nicer on the optical nerves.

It's so great, I have been doing nothing for the last 4 hours but staring at the toolset screen and smiling!

I haven't checked out the toolset, but I am wondering, "Why in the hell didn't I do this 10 years ago?" Soooo much nicer on the eyes not to have all that blaring WHITE background. If this is the best that can be done, then I'll consider it decent enough at that.
