Why such avid interest in romances?

The forum has, if anyone hasn't noticed yet, quite a few romance threads lately. Before anyone becomes angry, let me stress that this is not a thread meant to denounce anyone interested in romance, or to complain about the fact that so many people are interested in romance. Because that would be, well, kinda sorta really hypocritical of me (yes, I admit I am a  fan too).

I am honestly just curious--what makes the thought of romance in DA2 compelling for you? Is it the characters, the thought of romance in general?

Personally I loved the romances in DAO because it allowed for you to interact with the game world in a unique way. It was also part of what attracted me to the game (though the combat hooked me).  I'm hoping it will be the same for DA2. :)

It also has lots of threads on other things.

Part of it is because we know so little about the romances other than that they're in it. Which leads for lots of pages of speculations/hopeful thinking.

This question, again? We just had it! Anyhow, it seems your intention is good.

Romance is one aspect of the game, one I definitely enjoy. It's not the most important aspect to me, but it adds a whole new layer to the game. I liked how Gaider once explained it--the most important part of the story is that you care about it. So, the writers, in an effort to get you to care, throw out a bunch of hooks in all different directions. Romance is one of them, and it's often a very effective one.

If you didn't romance anyone, Morrigan's Dark Ritual would have had less impact. As friends, it still would have made a difference, but being in love with Morrigan or Alistair makes a hell of a difference. Being in love with Leliana or Zevran, too.

BioWare is really the only company who does romances like these. If this was more common, maybe we wouldn't see as many. But, like Laidlaw said, it's BioWare, it's their thaaaang.

I'm gonna go ahead and make a sweeping generalization here and say that there also seems to be a large population of female posters on this forum.

It's become a staple of BioWare RPGs, and every game they try something else just like any other aspect of the game and the role playing nature of it. What's a good story without some measure of romance?

It brings the characters to life and makes the story that much more engaging. You find yourself caring about what happens to these people. Not just through the romances of course but it is an integral part of it now.

And let's not discount the friendships either, the romanceble characters also happen to be the best friends for the PC of their same sex, or at least that's my experience.

ex: Morrigan and Ashley are for me very memorable and their loss meaningful even though I couldn't romance them as a female PC.

In any case, if you were at the live chat during the recent demo feed, you would have seen that, like, half of the messages being posted were 'WILL WE SEE MORRIGAN I WANT MY MORRIKINS BACK'. Men love the romances, too.

And?

There are plenty of males on this forum that are interested in LI's too, Goku.

Damn it, ninja'ed. :(

Er. If there's already been threads like this, then I'm very sorry--it's a little hard to keep track. Things move pretty fast in this forum.

I can ask someone to lock this, if that's the case though.

Says the one with a half-naked woman on the sig ^_^

We all play Bioware games for the companion interaction, right? I know I do. I always put Baldur's Gate above Icewind Dale and NWN waaay above Spellforce or Gothic for the sole reason of having a party I can chat with, companions I can hate or love. And if my companions add more to the story - be it by romance or plot importantce - so much the better :wizard:

I think it's because romance can add a lot of depth to a story, and I think it's going to be an interesting dynamic to watch evolve over the 10 year stretch of the game.

Maybe it's that we're inching closer to launch and are getting all this juicy info, thus inspiring people to speculate over who's going to be an LI. As for myself, I'm interested in a good story, and it's nice to have a well-written romance as part of the story. I think it can make you more emotionally invested in what happens.

Boy, my wife will be sad when she finds out. Apparently we've been fooling ourselves for many years now thinking we had romantic bliss. Who would have guessed we were both compensating when we enjoyed watching romantic plots unfurl in Dragon age?

Thank you for opening our eyes.

For me, I care because it adds some depth and interest for immersion and role-playing of my PC. The only reason I'm more concerned about who the LIs are instead of other information is because I don't want too much of the other information, lest I find spoilers I wish I hadn't found. Once we get the LIs all laid out, I'm likely going into a media blackout until launch anyway.

Edit: and agree @ Cutlass Jack. :P My boyfriend of 6 years will be quite upset that apparently my interest in LIs in a video game (which he is, too, as he's also a Bioware fan) means our relationship is non-existent. XD

I am actually not a big fan of romances in themselves. I generally think about them as a chance to learn more about a character and to have more interactions. In short, to me they are extra character-related content and more content is generally good.

They could just as well be replaced with a richer character backstory/friendship/personal quests/etc.

I really hope you're being sarcastic.

As for your question, OP, the answer is not a simple one. Some people simply get attched to a certain character (and no..not in a horny way). Others, like myself, simply do it out of Role Playing. When I play a RPG, I tend to identify myself with the character. I try to put myself in his skin and make him do what I would do given the situation. While some simply like romances,  regardless of them being in a book, movie or videogame.

There is also the satisfaction of developing your character or your companions to their fullest.

Also, saying that people like romances because they can't have them in real-life is....well..the forum rules probably wont let me say it with my own words but i'll stick with....sad and dissapointing.

Asking why there are so many romance threads by creating another romance thread. Hah! Anyway... Companions and romances are fun and BioWare obviously spends a lot of time and effort on each of them. It's just fun to interact with them in different ways. I don't really demand romances, the dialog is one of the the most important aspects for me, be it romantic or not.

The simple answer would be that it's a very popular aspect of the game. Personally I have no interest in creating romance with my party but I am more than happy for it to be a possibility in the game. The more diverse the game the more diverse the communities interaction with it; which as far as I'm concerned is a good thing.

I like to have an emotional investment in the games I play, and a real connection with the characters in it. The best way to acheive that are deeply developed characters, conversation, and romance. And I know it's "just a game" but it is really flattering to feel romanced in these games. This character depth is my favorite thing about the BioWare games and what sets them apart (and above) the others. It makes them far more engaging, compelling, and addictive for me.
