Its just people compensate what they cannot achieve in real life. Its the hard truth... But I'm sorry.

You know what I love? I love it when people believe that they have the answers to very difficult questions, and share their percieved answers with the world, although in truth, they are just bull****ting up and down the cost of the West Indies.  Truth be told, it makes my day...simply because these people are soooooo easy to find. ^_^

But to answer the OP's question, I'm going to be honest and just answer, well....I'm not so sure.
I don't quite understand it myself, but perhaps you have felt it too if you really liked a romanceble character in the DA series.  Having the feeling of connection with an idea or a person, I think is still the same feeling.  But still, like in DA:O, I remember the feeling of being really happy when Alistair was around, not just because he was funny, but especially after he handed me his rose, I couldn't wait to talk to him again, you know, just to see what he would say or what I could say to him.  :D

Its true. Its very difficult for me to find a sexy pirate wench who can bend me over backwards or a hot super weapon white haired elf that stabs people with their bare hands.... or spirit possessed mages with affinity for cats. Or merchant princes and insane Nomad elven leaders.

I can't achieve all those things in real life. Thank god I have romance options in DA2!!!!!

Due to the amount of avid interest in the subject I have thought about creating a thread entitled "Why such avid interest in avid interest in romances?', maybe that thread could be duplicated a few times then we might get one asking about the avid interest in those.

Bah, I'm happily married with two kids and a lovely, stable home life. I love in-game romances because they are an opportunity to explore angst I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN EXPERIENCING IN REAL LIFE.

Truly, having to go through that crap in reality? No thanks.

Boy, my wife will be sad when she finds out. Apparently we've been fooling ourselves for many years now thinking we had romantic bliss. Who would have guessed we were both compensating when we enjoyed watching romantic plots unfurl in Dragon age?

Thank you for opening our eyes.

Tell me about it! I met my husband while gaming. Our kids are going to traumatized when they find out that all those loving moments we've forced them to witness were all fake!

Me personaly?...well...I tend to live in my games. The real world feels hollow and empty to me, I see nothing but mean and spiteful people who care nothing for the troubles of others in the real world...it's a dark and demented place. I come home and turn on whatever game I'm playing at the time...and for those few hours the outside world no longer exsists, they are my escape and how I maintain my sanity in this backwards world. Romances to me...is another form of that. I have no interest in finding that special someone in the real world, idk why but it does not interest me. But when I play my games? I feel like a hopeless romantic and I care far more about those pixelated characters then I do about anyone else  out here except my mother and grandparents. Because I'll freely admit I'm pretty much emotionaly dead inside until I'm eaither watching Anime or playing a video game. Those are the only things that "turn on" my emotions. Is that healthy? not in the slightest. But thats just who I am and can happily live with it....and thats why I love romances, because the hopeless romantic that comes out when I play enjoys it.

/end rant

Romances are great character development tools, and of course, the interactive softcore porn is always an added bonus.

Romance is a nice addition to the game that helps greatly with developing character relationships. But the only problem I have is with people who treat Dragon Age like some virtual dating and sex simulator and completely obsess over nudity and sex mods.

Bunch of weirdos... <_<

Romances are a nice addition. But they are such a minor, minor thing compared to the rest of the story. People on the internet put way too much focus on them, to the extent that you think Bioware makes dating sims instead of RPGs.

With in-game romances, you can explore and experience something you won't (and probably wouldn't even want to) IRL. Aliens. Elves. Tragedy. Drama. Angst. Oh, my. If you're roleplaying a character that is in a romantic relationship like that it brings enjoyment to a whole new emotional level - to me, at least - when compared to just reading books/watching films with good romance storylines.

I do find obsession with nude mods and sex scenes a bit strange, though.

Did you not see how awfully akward the DAO ones were? I think it's totally understandable to want to improve on that.

Personally, I thought the sex scenes in DA:O were so bad it's good.

Especially how Morrigan decides to wear a bra for once.

Friendships are what really tugs at my heartstrings rather than romances. However, the reason why I somewhat care is because of the same sex romances. I'm extremely thankful to Bioware for being generous enough to even think about us non-heterosexual gamers. Especially when there are developers out there who refuse to even include us in their games.

I wouldn't really call nude mods and those crappy sex scene mods an "Improvement".

Some of us want both substance and show. A deep and memorable romance complemented by erotic sexual activity. Some of it can be strange, but it is what it is.

Allowing anything to be freely modable on the internet is just going to result in a billion porn mods.

Tis human nature.

Avid interest? More like an obsession.

I've seen posts where people refuse to buy the game if they can't have a romance with a certain character..

Thats pathetic no matter which way you slice it, and people like that obviously need some sort of counseling.

It would seem that the stereotype of RPG gamers being lonely and attention starved has a bit of truth to it, because I post on a number of gaming forums, but I've never seen anything quite like this forum where a minor subplot in the game outstrips the main plot in terms of interest..
